Garda U11F League Final at St Vincents on Sunday December 6th

                                                          St Vincent's 3.05 - Whitechurch 2.07

The underage activities for 2009 on the field of play came to an end with the final of the Garda League in Under 11 football when Whitechurch took on St Vincents in a highly entertaining game. Despite the recent floods the pitch was in good condition and the players from both sides took advantage. In the early stages the Whitechurch boys were a little rusty as St Vincents combined well to score two early goals before we had settled down. Gradually we came back into the game as Padraig Cloran held the defence together from full back. Cathal Sheehy also began to win more possession in the middle of the field and set up Hugh Woulfe for a trio of points to steady the ship. Cathal then scored a point himself before Daniel O'Regan set up Hugh for our 5th point. This left the minimum between the sides but a lapse in concentration allowed St Vincents through for their 3rd goal. They immediately added a point to leave the half time score at 3 -1 to 0 - 5 in favour of St Vincents.
Whitechurch started the 2nd half in great style and claimed 2 early goals by Jason O'Riordan and Daniel O'Regan to take the lead for the first time in the game. The game ebbed and flowed before St Vincents came back with 2 points to regain the lead. Hugh Woulfe responded to level the scores after good work by Jordan O'Connor and Pearse Phillips. St Vincents regained the lead only for Hugh to repeat the feat and level the game once again at 3 - 4 to 2 - 7. As the tension mounted St Vincents broke through and looked sure of a goal but Darragh McNamara brought off a fantastic save. He was ably supported by Cian O'Driscoll, Niall Lenihan, David Donovan, Mark Lynch and Cathal Dennehy in defence. Whitechurch attacked again but were unable to get the vital score. With a couple of minutes remaining St Vincents got through for a point to take the lead. In the final moments, the Whitechurch lads attacked in waves with Niall O'Connell and Kevin Hyde prominent and drew a great save from the St Vincents keeper. As the attacks continued we finally ran out of time to go down on a final score of 3 - 5 to 2 - 7. It was notable that we got all our scores from play.
It was a pity to lose such a game but with the great skill, spirit and commitment on display it will not be long before success is delivered. Our lads improved significantly as a result of taking part in the league and are well prepared for next year's under 12 grade. We have a good basis on which to build for the years ahead.

Cúl Camp 2009.

The Whitechurch Cúl Camp was a great success again this year - despite the challenging weather conditions. We had over 150 boys and girls taking part and they were kept buzy with hurling/camogie and football matches, skills, rounders, quiz and other activities. The emphasis was on participation and fun for the full spectrum of age groups. Visits to the camp by Cork stars Valerie Mulcahy & Daniel Goulding created excitement as well as having Catriona Foley & Rena Buckley as coaches for the week. Richie Forde, Michael Osborne, Eoghan Barry, Tony Hegarty, Eoin O'Mahoney, Padraig Cronin, Miriam O'Connell and Aoibhne McElhenny completed the team of 10 coaches. Each coach had a local assisant and a very special thanks is due to Elieen Geaney, Davie Donovan, Darragh & Sean Keane for their work in organising and supervising the Camp. Below are some photographs of the week.

Under 12 City Division Football Final (Section 2 Kilcully 22/05/09)

Whitechurch 1.12 - St Michaels 2.07

Congratulations to the Whitechurch Under 12 footballer's who defeated St Michaels in the City Final recently. This final turned out to be a real cliff hanger and it kept the large crowd on their toes till the final whistle. Whitechurch lead by a single point at the break 1.04 to 1.03 but St Michaels took control of the opening minutes of the second half and eventaually took a 3 point lead. This Whitechurch team are battlers and have a never say die attitude and with some fantastic defending never let St Michaels increase that 3 point lead. Whitechurch had a 16th player in the huge support in attendance and they responded accordingly. With 5 minutes to go Whitechurch had reduced the lead to a single point and were playing with great confidence. It looked like a draw might be on the cards but 3 unanswered points from Whitechurch gave us a 2 point lead heading into injury time. Whitechurch held on for a deserved victory 1.12 to 2.07. The standard of football from both sides was simply brillant and well done to both sets of mentors and especially Matt Shaw, Tony Blake, Noel Buckley, Denis Sheehan, Michael Woulfe and Tim Mulcahy from Whitechurch. We wish the team continued success in the county. Before the match both teams stood for a minute silence for the late Denis McGarry former secretary and club officer of Whitechurch GAA who died unexpectantly Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Under 11 Hurler's Win Garda League(Saturday 18/10/08)

After a superb performance under flood lights at Cloughduv in the semi-final during the week, the Whitechurch U11 hurling team completed a memorable year with a fine win over St. Vincents in the Garda league. Our lads, were without Hugh Woulfe due to injury, but got of to a good start with a point from a 65 by Peter Blake. St Vincents replied with a fine free taken from close to the side line. There was some nice hurling despite the difficult weather conditions and gradually the better balance across the Whitechurch team began to tell with two points from Cathal Sheehy and another from Padraic Dennehy. As half time approached Padraig Sheehan pounced on a loose ball to score a valuable goal and Peter Blake added another point. St Vincents replied with a point but as the referee blew the half time whistle Whitechurch had a nice position with the scoreline at 1 - 5 to 0 -2. Even though scores were difficult to come by in the second half there was no shortage of commitment and courage as the very strong the St Vincents lads launched several forceful attacks. However, the Whitechurch defence held firm with Con Mulcahy in goal and the full back line of Emmet Brickley, Ciarán O'Gorman and James O'Leary defending very well. The half backline of Timothy Buckley, Peter Blake and Donagh Buckley also defended as if their lives depended on it. Then Peter Blake struck a slightly fortunate goal from a long range free to break St Vincents' hearts who replied with a point but they were unable to break through the Whitechurch defence. Michael Hyde, Padraic Dennehy and Kevin Lenihan worked tirelessly to maintain the momentum. Then Cathal Sheehy and Tristan Defern combined with help from Garret Stoyle to set up Shane O'Connell for a goal and the final score of the game as it ended 3 - 5 to 0 -3.
There was great jubilation among the players and the large numbers of parents as team captain Peter Blake introduced the team to Garda Brian McCarthy as the winners' medals and the cup were presented. Padraic Dennehy deservedly won the man of the match award to round off a fine season. It was Whitechurch's first success in this competition which has been running for 12 years. Indeed it rounded off a great treble for this U11 team as they had already won the John Kearns Memorial Shield in football and the East Cork hurling league.
Great credit is due to Matt Shaw for managing the team and to coaches Denis Sheehan, Tony Blake, Tim Mulcahy, Noel Buckley for their expertise and commitment in developing this fine bunch of players.

Under 10 Hurler's Win Aghada Blitz(Aghada 04/10/08)

After doing well in the East Cork league across the summer in games against Aghada, St. Catherines, Bride Rovers, Cloyne and Passage, the U10 hurlers qualified for the blitz finals at Aghada on Sat. Oct. 4th. The rain held off and our boys started well in the semi-final of their group against Fermoy and won comfortably on a scoreline of 5 - 3 to 2 -0. Meanwhile, Bride Rovers defeated Watergrasshill in the other semi-final to set up a final that would be a repeat of a close encounter earlier in the summer. Whitechurch got off to a great start with three early goals - two from the lively Aidan Kelleher and one from a determined Michael Caton. Bride Rovers hit back with a goal and two points before half time. The second half turned out to be quite a battle with Jason O'Riordan scoring a vital goal before Bride Rovers again increased the pressure with a goal and a point. As a result we led by 4 - 0 to 2 - 3 with more than five minutes remaining and a major defensive effort was required. Cathal, Dennehy, David Donovan and Niall Lenihan held firm in the full back line while Cian O'Driscoll, Hugh Woulfe and Conor Kelly made numerous clearances from the half back line. Cathal Sheedy, Padraig Cloran and Cormac O'Flynn put all their skills and energy in covering backwards and forwards from around the centre of the pitch. Daniel O'Regan. Kevin Hyde, Denis O'Sullivan, David Murphy, Cormac Conway, Darragh McNamara, Aidan Buckley and Jack Kelly all contributed nicely. We deservedly held out to win by a goal. This was the third year in a row for Whitechurch U10 teams to win this competition and it has been a huge benefit in the development of our young hurlers.

Many thanks to both Aghada for hosting these most enjoyable games and to the players, parents and mentors

Under 11 Hurler's win East Cork Final.(27/09/08 - Cobh)

Whitechurch 2.07 -  Carrig Na Bhfear 1.03

Whitechurch U11 hurlers entered this year's East Cork U11 hurling league as a means of getting additional games and experience for the team. The league stages went very well as the team suffered just one defeat - actually at Carrig na bhFear. As a result we achieved second place on the league table and qualified for the final against Carrig. The finals of several league E Cork competitions were all scheduled for the same day at Cobh on a lovely
sunny Saturday. It was a very close game in the first half. Whitechurch got off to a good start with points from Cathal Sheehy and two each from Hugh Woulfe and Peter Blake. However, Carrig kept in touch with a goal and two points to leave the sides level at 0 - 5 to 1 - 2. Carrig scored an early point in the second half and began to take control around the middle of the field. However, the excellence of our full back line - James O'Leary, Ciaran
O'Gorman and Emmet Brickley - combined with a lack of accuracy among the Carrig forwards kept the score line down. Padraic Dennehy got an equalising point and the game remained deadlocked for a prolonged period. Our defence continued to soak up the pressure and crucially did not concede any scores. As the game entered the last 3 minutes our lads won some good possession and Padraic Dennehy drove home a vital goal. From the puck out Kevin
Lenihan secured possession and scored a fine point. Tristan Defern followed up with a good goal in the final minute to make the final score 2 - 7 to 1 - 3. In truth the final scoreline flattered us, but scoring spree in the last few minutes demonstrated great resilience and confidence. It was a credit to Matt Shaw and all the hard work through the year.

Under 8 and under 10 Hurlers Visit Ballingarry.

On Saturday August 23rd 37 young hurlers from Whitechurch visited Ballingarry Co. Limerick for their annual outing. Both the Under 8s and the Under 10s were close to full strength for their friendly games against the local Ballingarry sides. Even the rain held off for the matches and it was a very enjoyable event for all. Thanks to Ballingarry for hosting us, to Tim O'Leary and Bus Eireann for the bus, to the many parents for their support and to the menors of both teams for making the event a success.

Cúl Camp 2008

This year's Cul Camp in Whitechurch was again a great success.  Croke Park has teamed up with Vhi Healthcare to arrange a nationally co-ordinated programme to encourage children to learn and develop sporting and life-skills by participating in Gaelic Games, in a fun, non-competitive environment.  The camps are running throughout all 32 counties this summer.  As part of the VHI Cul Camp scheme all 115 participants in the Whitechurch Cul Camp received a set of playing gear.  Each day the 7 coaches and their assistants strived to develop new skills in a fun and enjoyable way even if the weather was not as kind to us this year as previously !  Participants later used mini-games to exhibit the skills learned from the earlier sessions.Whitechurch GAA Club has put in a great effort in organising the local Cul Camps in recent years and is delighted with the large attendance, the quality of the coaching and the the fun activities being enjoyed by all the participants. Great thanks is due to the 7 coaches - Miriam O'Connell, Anora Mulchay, Margaret Foley, Lydia Cunningham, Tony Hegarty, Noel O'Donovan & Padraig Gould as well as their assistants - John Sheehan, TJ Hegarty, Patrick Hayes, James Furlong, Gemma Cahill, Shauna Brickley & Aisling Furlong.

Under -11 Footballers Win John Kerins Memorial Trophy

Our Under 11 Footballers qualified for the finals of the John Kerins Memorial Shield by virtue of narrow but merited victories over Gleann na Laoi and Brian Dillons in the qualifying rounds. These gained them a spot in the semi-finals at Pairc Ui Rinn where Passage West provided the opposition. Our lads played with the aid of the slight breeze and got off to a flying start with early goals from Cathal Sheehy, Con Mulcahy, Hugh Woulfe and Padraic Dennehy to take a commanding 4 - 3 to 1 - 0 half time lead. The continued to play intelligent football and apply great teamwork in the second half where Tristan Defern, Shane O'Connell, Kevin Lenihan, Padraig Cloran and Emmet Brickley defended strongly. The eventually ran out comfortable winners on the scoreline 5 - 6 to 3 - 0 and qualified for the final.

Ballinora awaited us in the final having proven much too strong for Donoughmore in the other semi-final. Both teams proudly paraded around Pairc Ui Rinn behind a pair of pipers before the final. This time we got off to a very poor start and were 1 - 2 to nil in arrears within 5 minutes. Michael Hyde then took control and set up Padraig Sheehan for a fine goal to steady the nerves. Con Mulcahy then converted a second goal before Padraic Dennehy took control with two further goals giving our lads a half time lead of 4 - 2 to 1 - 2.

The second half was a low scoring affair with great defending from Ciaran O'Gorman, Peter Blake, James O'Leary, Timothy Buckley while Donagh Buckley and Garret Stoyle were prominent in the attack. Their teamwork was again to the fore and was the key to the final scoreline of 4 -3 to 1 - 4. Amid great scenes of jubilation the joint captains - Padraic Dennehy and Timothy Buckley collected the trophy. Great credit is due to the coaches for their great commitment and coaching - in particular Matt Shaw, Denis Sheehan, Tim Mulcahy, Noel Buckley and Tony Blake. It was fantastic to see the parents and relations of virtually every player on the panel in attendance and thanks to a fine bunch of players and coaches it was a memorable day for all.

Whitechurch Under 8s & U10s visit Dungarvan

The sunny South East lived up to its reputation(Not unusual as its near Wexford) on Saturday Sept. 22nd when 52 young hurlers from Whitechurch visited Brickey Rangers (Dungarvan) for their annual excursion. Both the Under 8s and the Under 10s were at full strength for a double blitz in both hurling and football against Brickey Rangers and Aghada. Each team played 2 hurling matches and two football matches so there was plenty of game time for all players. The Brickey Rangers facilities at Bushy Park were excellent and the standard of hurling and football played was equally good. It was a thoroughably enjoyable event and certainly an enormous number of calories were used up during the day. A big thanks to Brickey Rangers for their wondeful hospitality, to Tim O'Leary and CIE for the bus, to the many parents for their support and to the menors of both teams for making the event such a success.

Under 8 and 10 Hurling Teams Play Grenagh in Challange.

Both our U8s & U10s played hurling friendlies against Grenagh recently. On a beautiful sunny evening we had a great turnout of players and parents. The selectors had a very busy evening as we had all of 28 U8 players togged out and extra time was played to ensure everybody got plenty of game time. The U10s also had  a busy time and played some of their best hurling of the year and went on to the narrowest of victories with an excellent scoreline of 2 - 10 to 5 - 0. On a night when some of the stronger players were missing due to an U11 football game, it was a very fine performance.

After doing well in the East Cork league across the summer in games against Kilworth, Mallow, Carrig na bhFear and Passage, the U10s qualified for the finals at Aghada on Sat. Sept. 8th. On a marvellous sunny day they started well in the semi-final of their group against Lisgoold and won by 3 - 1 to 0 - 1. Meanwhile Carrig na bhFear defeated Killeagh in the other semi-final to set up a final between the close neighbours. Again Whitechurch started strongly and led by 2 - 0 to no score at the halftime break. It was all Carrig as the start of the second half as they scored 1 - 2 without reply to leave the minimum between the sides mid-way through the second half. The Whitechurch team then came into its own and resumed scoring to run out winners on a scoreline of 4 - 1 to 1 - 3.

Many thanks to both Aghada & Grenagh for hosting these most enjoyable games and to the players, parents and mentors

Whitechurch GAA Cúl Camp 2007(Monday July 30th to Friday August 03rd)

Cork Stars Visit Whitechurch Camp.

This year's camp again was run under the VHI Cúl camp umbrella coordinated directly by the GAA. This proved highly successful in Whitechurch with 97 boys and girls in attendance. As part of the VHI sponsorship each participant received a jersey, shorts, socks, kit bag and a drink bottle. These gifts went down a treat with the children. The camp ran daily from 10am to 2.30pm where the coaches and assistants demonstrated the skills of both football and hurling/camogie to individual groups. The camp organisation and structure was top class with each coach responsible for a workable size group of children and ably assisted by an assistant coach. Whitechurch GAA club would like to thank the coaches Tony Hegarty, Emer Watson, David Kearney, Miriam O’Connell, Eoin O’Mahony and assistant coaches John Sheahan, Norma O’Leary, James Furlong, Cormac O’Sullivan and Aisling Furlong. This structure ensured the children increased thier chances to develop and learn. Throughout the week Whitechurch were fortunate to have Cork stars Rena Buckley, Valerie Mulcahy and Sean Óg Ó hAilpín visit the camp.

Some of the key highlights for the children were to meet and talk to the stars while receiving their autographs. Whitechurch GAA are grateful to these sportsmen and women for taking the time out to meet the children. We wish all these players the very best of luck in their respective up coming All Ireland championship games. Below are some photographs from the camp.

Hurley Presentation to School.

After the winter indoor season, the GAA coaching programme in the school moved outdoors recently. In order to mark the occasion the Club chairman, Michael Downing, presented two dozen hurleys to school principal, Tom Hallahan. The Club also sponsors the programme where the boys and girls from 3rd to 6th class receive coaching on the skills of hurling and football. It runs on Friday mornings and is proving to be of great benefit to the children.

The picture below shows Michael Downing presenting the hurleys to Tom Hallihan in the presence of Gerard O'Connell N.T., Tony Hegarty (Coach) and 5th class girls.

The 3rd class boys team had great success in the "Sciath na Scol" indoor hurling championships. They were in the top grade (Premier) and made it all the way to the County Final, where they were quite unfortunate to fall to a very strong team from St. Anthony's of Ballinlough.

In order not to be outdone by the boys, the girls 5th class camogie team also had great success in the "Sciath na Scol" indoor championship. They also reached the County final in the Premier grade where they went down to an excellent Douglas team. Great credit is due to the players on both teams, to the GAA coach - Tony Hegarty and to the teachers who prepared the teams - Rita Mulcahy, Mary O'Sullivan, Seamus Twohig, Gerard O'Connell & Tom Hallahan

Indoor Hurling

The under 8, 9 and 10 teams held challange games with local club Grenagh in the Whitechurch and Watrtloo Community center on Saturday February 17th last. This was a great occasion to get the season up and running. A large number of parents and spectators turned up to cheer on the kids. Overall it turned out to be a very successful day. The future of both clubs looks strong with the numbers and talent on display. Below are the photographs of the Whitechurch teams which took part.

Underage Trip to Ballybrown.(21/10/06)

On Sat. Oct. 21st our U6, U8 & U10 hurlers travelled to Ballybrown in Limerick on their annual outing. As our bus left Whitechurch it was raining heavily, but fortunately we had a lovely dry afternoon in Clarina. Despite the heavy underfoot conditions our hurlers delivered some fine performances. All three games were highly competitive but played in a sporting manner. All enjoyed
the games & the whole outing. Thanks to Ballybrown GAA Club for hosting us and providing great refreshments for all afterwards.
Special thanks also to all the parents who travelled to provide support as well as the mentors who have given generously of their time to develop the skills and teamwork of these youngsters. Below are team photo's from the day.

New Training Methods.

A company called Sliotar Hitters demonstrated new novel training techniques for hurling and camogie in Whitechurch lately. The company based in county Offaly is run by KP Egan. His novel ideas were born following many years of training under age teams. The main emphasis behind the techniques bring fun and variety to the training ground while introducing and mastering the skills of hurling. These aids also help the trainer immensely. Below are a few photographs of some of the equipment in action at the trial in Whitechurch. We hope to have this equipment up and running over the coming weeks.

Below are a few photographs showing the use of the main equipment techniques.

Under 10 East Cork Hurling League

Whitechurch under 10 hurler's are taking part in the East Cork hurling league. We have played 2 games to date. In our opening encounter we lost to Castlelyons and on Monday night May 29th played Carrig away and won on a scoreline of 4.02 - 0.01. This proved be a great game with all of the scores coming in the last quarter. Very skillful hurling was evident from both sides with impressive side line ball skills and free taking. It is wonderful to see the game played at this age group and the support from parents on the line was terrific. Well done to all involved and a particular thank you to all the mentors who give up their time in ptraining and preparing teams. We wish the team continued success in the league. Below are the photographs of both teams who took part on Monday may 29th. We will try to get the names for the Carrig team later.

Under 11 Football - John Kearns Memorial Trophy.

White's Cross 1.0 - Shamrocks 1.1

Our under 11 footballers reached the semi final of the division 2 section of the John Kearns Memorial trophy held in Pairc Ui Rinn on May 20th last. We had won our section in Mayfield a number of weeks previously. A panel of 27 players turned up for the semi final clash with Shamrocks. Despite applying most of the pressure we failed to convert a number of chances in the opening half and against the run of play Shamrocks broke to score a goal. However the team never gave up and continued to battle. Most of the play of the second half play took place in the Shamrocks half but credit to their backline and gaolkeeper, they absorbed the pressure and cleared their lines very effectively. Shamrocks took a 4 point lead after pointing from a penalty with 4 minutes remaining. Shane O'Leary goaled from a close in free to us a glimmer of hope but unfortunately the clock ran out and we found ourselves one point behind. The game finished Shamrocks 1.01 - White's Cross 1.0. The team lined out as follows:

Jordan Murray

Mathew Donovan - Ian Burke - Fergal Reid

Kevin Ryan - Cody Brickley - Fionn Hall

Shane O'Leary(1.0) - Patrick Daly

Dean Twohig -  Killian Ryan - Dylan Fitzgerald

Evan Galvin - Paul Hayes - Corey Galvin

Subs: Conor Dalton - Aidan Paker - Patrick O'Sullivan - Christopher McAuliffe - William McAuliffe - Timothy Crowley - Jack kelleher - Darragh Corrigan - Conor Hegarty - Darragh Kelly - James Murhy - Darragh Sheehan

Credit must go to all the panel of players and selectors who done the Club proud on the day. The back bone of any successful Club are the underage teams. This panel of players will be successful if they continue to train and play together. A special word of thanks to all mentors involved: Mathew Shaw - Dermot Hurley - Patrick hayes - Pat Reid and Tim O'Leary. Below is the panel of players which participated in the tournament.

Well Done to all involved.

Young hurler’s get their hand’s on the Liam McCarthy Cup

On Saturday April 22nd 40 of the club's youngest hurlers traveled to take on Grenagh in friendly games at Under 6, Under 8 and Under 10. The Under 6's played indoors and for most it was their first ever competitive game. After some early nerves the team settled well enjoyed a high scoring game against the evenly-matched Grenagh side.

The Under 8's played their first outdoor game of the year in ideal weather conditions. While they conceded an early goal, they recovered strongly and held an eight point lead by half time. The Grenagh half time team talk worked wonders and led to an immediate 3 goal blitz. However, Whitechurch regained the initiative and scored a further 2 goals.

It was also the first outdoor game of the year for the Under 10's. We have a very strong and able bunch of 9 and 10 year old players this year. This showed as Whitechurch controlled the play for much of the game and despite some rustiness in the shooting department the team gave an impressive display.

There was great excitement after the games as the Liam McCarthy cup was present and Tom Kenny was on hand to sign autographs, have photograph's taken and talk with the players - and their parents. Many thanks to the Grenagh Club for orgainsing this highly successful event and to all the parents for their enthusiastic support.

Under 21 Hurling Cup Visit to School.

The under 21 Hurling Captain Patrick O'Driscoll, Centre Back Brian O'Sullivan and Goalkeeper Dylan Burke along with Club members visited the school on Wednesday December 14th. All the school children gathered in the Hall to welcome the players and see the cup. School principal Tom O'Hallahan welcomed back the players and congratulated them on their victory. It was only a few short years earlier when these players attended the School. The children were encouraged to play sport and it would be their turn in years to come to bring more cups back to the School. The kids reluctantly accepted home work off for the night and each received a treat on the day. Whitechurch GAA Club would like to thank the School Principal and teachers for their help in organising the visit and hopefully we will be back there again with more Silver Ware.

Below a few photographs from the visit.

Under 11 Footballer's Successful in Invitational Blitz.

In an under 11 invitational Football Blitz held in Mayfield on Saturday December 10th the White's Cross team won out their group with a 5 point victory over Mayfield in the final. They came away with a plaque and medals after winning all their games with the exception of one. This was a great achievement for the team and mentors.

Well done to all involved.

Cork Star John Gardiner takes a couple of coaching sessions with the under age.

In conjunction with a coaching course in UCC John Gardiner visited Whitechurch during the week to coach the under age. On Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st August over 60 kids took part in the two 2 hour sessions. Day one comprised of mainly 12 and 13 year old while day 2 was split between the under 10s and under 8s. This exercise proved to be extremely beneficial for all who took part. John went through a wide range of drills including the basics of blocking and hooking. He emphasised the importance of concentration and continuous practice. He gave tips on how to practice at home by hurlig the ball against the wall (and offered to pay for any damaged windows!!!). The kids thanked John for his time and wished him and Cork the very besy best in the up coming All Ireland Final against Galway. Whitechurch GAA Club would like to thank John for taking these valuable coaching sessions and look forward to a return visit.

Below some photographs from day one of the coaching.

Whitechurch and White's Cross Summer Camp 2005.

Venue: Whitechurch and Waterloo Community Pitch

Date: Monday July 25th to Friday July 29th

Time: 10am to 2pm Daily.

The Summer Camp was a huge success again this year with 66 children taking part. All children got the chance to learn and practise the skills of Football and Hurling. The coaches this year were Danny O'Neill, John Keating and Collette Navey. Whitechurch Gaa would like to thank the coaches on a job well done. It was an enjoyable week for the children, especially on Thursday when they were visited by Cork Hurling Star John Gardiner (Na Piarsaigh) and on Friday Ronan Curran from St Finbarrs dropped in. Both John and Ronan were kept busy for an hour signing autographs on jerseys, hurleys, helmets and posters. Also on Friday David Scally from Scally's supermarket in Blarney presented the Club with an under-age set of Jersey's. Club Chairman Michael Downing accepted the jersey's on behalf of the Club and thanked most sincerely the Scally foundation for their generous sponsorship. Michael emphasised the importance of sponsorship and in particular to the under-age sector. He thanked the Cork stars for taking time out to visit the camp and wished the lads continued success in the 2005 Championship. Our thanks to all who took part and special thanks to John and Ronan on taking time out to visit the Camp and to the club members who made it all possible.

Some photographs from the camp.

Above David Scally and Club chairman Michael Downing displaying the new jersey's. Below a brief article from David on the Scally Foundation.

The Scally foundation was set up in the year 2000 as a thank you to the people of Blarney and surrounding areas for their support over the previous 21 years. The idea of funding local organisations has been very generously received as it has been seen as a way that scally's and its staff can give something back to the community that keeps us in business. As a family Seamus, carmel and myself derive great pride from this awards programme. It is very evident to us that there are some incredible people working tirelessly in the community to make things better for every body else, and whitechurch is certainly to the fore when it comes to applications to the Scally community foundation. We are delighted to be able to support the work being done by Michael Downing and his team in whitechurch GAA I was present last week when Ronan Curran visited the club to meet with all the up and coming stars of the future and it was great to see so many youngsters involved. Great also to see the senior players giving the encouragement and advice to the adorning fans. It really goes to show you how important sport is in our community and the tremendous voluntary help that continues to be such a huge asset to you in whitechurch. Many thanks for involving Scallys in your club and can I finish by extending best wishes to your club for the remainder of the season.

Under-8 Hurling Challange Vs Grenagh.

Our under 8 hurlers travelled to Grenagh on July 26th to take on their peers. It was a lovely evening for hurling and both sides took full advantage by putting on a great display of hurling. It was a very competitive game and while Whitechurch scored an early point, Grenagh came back with two well taken goals. Whitechurch increased the pace in the second half and just came out on top by the narrowest of margins, with the scoreline 3 - 2 to 3 - 3.  Many thanks to Grenagh for hosting the game as well as for providing the refreshments afterwards. Thanks also to the many parents for attending (and providing strong vocal support). Well done to all the players for commitment and great enthusiasm - they provided great entertainment

Under age Update

The under 12 Hurlers were beaten by Douglas in the Championship. However the players put up a good show and are progressing well as a team. Training for this group will continue every Tuesday night during the summer between 6pm and 7pm. Under 14 hurlers will continue to train every Wednesday night between 6pm and 7pm. Any new players are welcome to attend at the appropriate times.

Under 8 Hurling Friendly Vs Bride Rovers

Our Under 8 hurlers took on Bride Rovers in Rathcormac on July 7th . This game represented the first opportunity for the team to wear the new set of jerseys - sponsored by Scally's Super Value in Blarney. Eventhough there were a few players absent due to holidays, we still fielded a strong side. After weekly training sessions since April, the team was on top form. Cheered on by a large number of parents, enthusiasm was high and a good performance was ensured. Our midfield and half backs were well on top and delivered a plentiful supply of scoring opportunities to the forw a rds. As result an impressive lead was established early in the game and this initiative was maintained to the end. The final score was 9 - 2 for Whitechurch to 1 - 0 for Bride Rovers. Many thanks to the players for providing such an impressive display, and thanks to the parents for their time as well as providing transport. Thanks too to Bride Rovers for an enjoyable game that was played on a perfect pitch and also for the refreshments.

Whitechurch Under 8 & Under 10 Hurlers take on Bride Rovers.

The final indoor hurling matches of the season for our Under 8 and Under 10 hurlers took place in the Community Centre on Saturday April 9th. At Under 8 's we had sufficient numbers to field four Seven a side teams, while Bride Rovers had two teams. As a result each of our teams played half a match. Despite this our players performed excellently, accumulated big scorelines and acquitted themselves very well. At Under 10's we also had a very strong and determined team. The game was very close and exciting with high levels of skill on view. Our team performed very well. Light refreshments were served after the games. Thanks to all the players, parents, supporters and organisers for such an enjoyable hurling blitz.

Whitechurch Under 8 & 10 Hurlers take on Ballinhassig

The first indoor hurling matches of 2005 for our Under 8 and 10 hurlers took place in the Community Centre on Saturday March 12th. We fielded two Seven a side teams at each age group and we still had a strong bunch of reserves for each game. Despite being billed as "friendly games" the levels of intensity on display, by the representatives of both parishes, in each game were worthy of a championship encounter. There certainly was no need in any of the games for the motivating pep talks at half time. All 4 teams accumulated big score' s and acquitted themselves very well. It is great to see such interest from the young players and we would encourage all kids to remain active in the club and in sport. Whitechurch GAA Club would like to thank Ballinhassig GAA for fulfilling the fixture and a very enjoyable and entertaining mornings sport took place. All the kids enjoyed light refreshments after their encounters. Lets not forget the Whitechurch mentors who organised the blitz and who spend time every Saturday training and coaching the young kids.

Thanks and well done to all involved.

Juvenile Hurling Team Honoured at Medal Presentation Night.

The successful City league and Championship winning hurling team was honoured at a function in Whitechurch and Waterloo on Friday February 04th last. Cork All Star Full Forward Brian Corcoran was the special guest on the night. Speakers on the night included under age Chairman Kevin Downing, Club Chairman Michael Downing, Team Manager Patsy Hegarty and special guest Brian Corcoran.Club Chairman Michael Downing welcomed Brian to Whitechurch and congratulated him on his All Ireland victory in 2004 and wished him success in 2005. Michael also congratulated the under 16 team, manager and selectors on their success and keeping the Club colours flying. He encouraged people to get involved in Club activities and in particular parents of players. Help is needed in the running of the Club. In this day and age voluntary help is limited and the running of a Club is always left to same people. Fresh blood and new ideas are always welcome. Team manager Patsy Hegarty thanked his fellow selectors Robbie Boland, John Scanlon and Ray Burke for their help and commitment not just during 2004 but over the past number of years. This panel of players started at under 11 and in their first outing were hammered by Mayfield. The team stayed together and trained as a unit and developed into a successful disciplined team. Brian congratulated the team on their success and wished them further success in the years to come. He emphasised the importance of sport particularily in the current environment where so many different distractions are available. Sport tends to keep children on the straight and narrow. Brian congratulated the Club, mentors and encouraged the kids to listen and respect their coaches. He thanked the club for the invitation to the function and presented the individual players with their medals. Jerseys, helmets and hurleys were autographed by the Cork Star. Two further presentations took place, the proceeds of the long puck competition were divided between 2 local missionary Priests Fr Dick O' Riordan and Fr Sonny O'Sullivan. Nephew of Fr O'Riordan - Declan accepted on his behalf while Fr Sonny O' Sullivan was in attendance. Tea, sandwiches and cakes were in abundance for all who turned up. Whitechurch GAA Club would like to thank Brian Corcoran for attending the function and all who helped make the night a success. Without these people this sort of night would not happen.

Sciath Na Scol.

St. Patrick’s National School, Whitechurch, Co-Cork

Whitechurch N.S. first participated in Sciath Na Scol competitions in September 1978. This coincided with the appointment of Mr. John Brown (R.I.P.) as school principal. The earliest school jersey was a striped red and blue and while early results were not wonderful the team made steady progress. They travelled to away matches ( in GREAT NUMBERS ) in an old battered Ford Cortina.

Whitechurch won their first Sciath Na Scol title in September 1981. This was the U-13 Hurling Final, which was played in Whitechurch against our old rivals New Inn. This final became known as ‘The Final of the Long Grass’. This was in reference to our unique tactic of allowing the grass to grow to a height of at least two inches before the final, so our star corner forward (who was quite small) could hide in the long grass before suddenly appearing to strike home the winning goal.

Between 1981 and 1988, Whitechurch won a succession of finals. This was a great period for the boys Hurling and Football teams. Indeed they were so successful that in one year they won all four finals, U-11 Hurling and Football, and U-13 Hurling and Football. During this period the finals were transferred (from the old home and away basis) to Páirc Ui Chaoimh and this greatly enhanced the importance and sense of excitement generated by the children’s achievements

By 1991-92, there were just two boys competitions in that season, and we won them both! The shield competition had been introduced at this time and this pitted all the Sciath Na Scol group winners against each other to determine the best team overall in the county. As our Hurlers were playing in a 13-a-side group, they were not eligible for the Shield Competition, but our 15-a-side Football team qualified. This was our only time in this competition. Despite the small size of our school population, we were quite unlucky to go down in the final to a very good Dublin Hill outfit.

In 1993-1994, we made our first tentative steps in Ladies (Girls) Football - little did we know what a wonderful adventure lay ahead. In 1994, we won our first Girls Sciath Na Scol title in a marvellous match against a gallant Ovens side. Since then we have progressed to the top section in Girls Football, and have contested five of the last seven finals, including this year when we won an unprecedented four-in-a-row of titles.

In 2001-2002, our school achieved our first double when both our Boys and Girls Football teams won their respective finals at Páirc Ui Rinn on the same day. In 2000-2001, our Girls teams also completed a double by winning both their hurling and Football Sections that year.

The recent introduction of Indoor Hurling/Camogie has created a new interest during the winter period. Whitechurch Community Hall has been the venue for many group finals and county semi-final qualifiers. Our third class boys reached the county final in 2001. We also had the great honour of winning the 2000 county final for fifth class girls in Neptune Stadium.

Over the years many talented players form the school have gone on to represent Cork at various levels in both codes. Virtually every year we have been fortunate enough to have a representative on the Cork Primary School’s Teams. Jerry Dennehy was the first way back in 1982, and Denise Murphy our last in 2002. Among the other notable players who went on to represent cork were;

                     ·      Brian O’Connell (Cork minor hurling and football)

· Padraig Kissane (Current Cork Senior Football Panelist)

· Valerie Mulcahy (Midfielder on the current Cork Senior Ladies Football)

· George O’Callaghan (Striker for Cork City F.C.)

These are just a few of the many wonderfully talented boys and girls who have represented Whitechurch National School with pride and honour, over the last 25 years.

As a school we have tried to engender love of all games and insist that the main benefit is to compete in a sporting manner and be dignified in defeat or victory. The benefits derived from participation in the Sciath Na Scol competitions are numerous. We have over the years learned much more from defeat than victory. Friendships have been forged, characters have been chiselled, a positive work ethic has been instilled and great joy has been brought to our school and parish. The memories which have been shared, will remain with those who have shared our Sciath Na Scol adventures, for the rest of their lives. Indeed, many players have gone on to play with the local clubs.

Congratulations to both teams on reaching the finals and a special congratulations to the boys on winning their final. It is a huge achievement in such a competitive competition and congratulations, well done and thank you to the teachers and mentors of both teams. Vast amounts of work goes into the training and preparation of teams and a lot of this takes place outside of school hours. Well done and keep up the good work.
