Junior A Hurling Championship

Whitechurch 4.19 - Lough 1.07 (Ballinlough 26/05/06)

The opening round of the A hurling championship turned out to be a one sided affair with Whitechurch dominating from the word go. Five of the A panel were unavailable for selection owing to injury / exams. John O'Connell - Roy O'Driscoll and Victor O'Sullivan injured while Peter O'Dricoll and Paul O'Sullivan are sitting exams. However despite their loss the panel is strong enough to bring in players equal in calibre.

A tally of 4.19 indicates the dominance with Ian Lee hitting the opening point in the first minute. Whitechurch hit a couple of wides before the Lough drew level following a free. This was the closest the Lough got to Whitechurch as the flood gates opened and in the space of 18 minutes Whitechurch notched up a further 2.05 following points  from Conor Buckley, Colm Sheahan, two from Jason Kelly with Donacha Murnane hitting 1.01 and Murt Kelleher a goal. This left the scores 2.06 to 0.01. A glimmer of hope for the Lough as they executed  a good goal and followed up with a point from a free and one from play. The Whiechurch half back was dominant with captain Kevin Buckley leading by example at centre back. The remainder of the half belonged to Whitechurch and after a Donnacha Murnane shot on goal was well saved the resulting 65 was scored by Colm Sheahan. Conor Buckley hit 2 frees while Donacha hit a further 1.01 before the break and on the stroke of half time Ian Lee netted their fourth goal following great play by Murk Kelleher to leave the half time scores Whitechurch 4.10 - Lough 1.02. Despite scoring 4.10 in the first Whitechurch also accumulated 10 wides.

As a contest the game was over at the interval but it was the Lough who opened the scoring in the second half hitting a point following 2 wides by Whitechurch. Whitechurch hit the post and a well taken shot on target was saved from Murt. It took full forward Jason Kelly to get Whitechurch back  scoring  after striking a wonderful point from the left side. Two points from each side were scored in the next 8 minutes with Ian Lee from play and Conor Buckley from a free doing the honours from Whitechurch. Despite seeing very little of the ball Brian Murphy in goal handled all concerned with confidence and puck outs were putting immense pressure on the Lough half back line where the Whitchurch forwards were well on top.The Buckley brothers combined well for the next point after Kevin found Conor from a free in the half back line. Jason Kelly, Conor Buckley and Donnacha Murnane hit points with Eoin Murnane hitting 2 before the end to leave the score Whitechurch 4.19 - Lough 1.07. Whitechurch had a further 6 wides in the second half to leave a tally of 16 wides for the game. It is nice to get through the opening round of the Championship,  however tough games lie ahead if we are to progress further alot of hard work in the training field is required.

We wish the team continued success in the Championship.

Junior B Hurling Championship

Whitechurch 0.18 - Na Piarsaigh 2.02 (Kilcully 27/05/06)

Not having used any subs the previous night in the A championship Whitechurch fielded a strong B Championship team against Na Piarsaigh in Kilcully. A  panel of 28 players were on hand for selection. The game was delayed for almost 45 minutes after the appointed referee failed to show and a substitute referee found. Whitechurch played with the aid of a breeze in the opening half and notched up a four point lead within 6 minutes following points from play by William Casey and Seanie Murnane and two well taken frees from John O'Callaghan and Conor Kelleher. Two certain goal chances were missed by Whitechurch before the in form O'Callaghan struck 3 more points two from play and one from a free to open up a seven point lead. This was no game for the faint hearted as a physically tough but fair encounter was on hand. Whitechurch were up for the game and responded respectively and particularly on the score board and not letting Na Piarsaigh dominate. The Whitechurch full back line were strong with Paul O'Donovan dominating. The centre field combination of Seanie Murnane and Conor Kelleher was working very well with William Casey at centre forward on top. Whitechurch hit a further 3 popints before the break with Conor Kelleher pointing a free, William Casey from play and a well worked move saw Philip O'Connell set up O'Callaghan for his fifth of the half. Na Piarsaigh got on the score sheet with a goal in the 28th minute after a cross from the wing was deflected to the net by their corner forward. This left the half time score Whitechurch 0.10 - Na Piarsaigh 1.0

Despite playing against the breeze in the second half it was Whitechurch who opened the stronger with two well taken points from Philip O'Connell and William Casey before Na Piarsaigh pointed a free. John Drummy replaced Thomas Meade at wing back and immediately was involved in the action. Both sides swapped frees with O'Callaghan scoring for Whitechurch. Whitechurch at this stage were well on top and O'Callaghan hit 2 more from play to leave a 10 point margin. After 20 minutes of the second half John Hegarty replaced Ray Burke. Foir this Championship encounter we had a father and son combination. Whitechurch corner forward Ray Burke and goal keeper Dylan. I would guess it has been a while since a father and son combination appeared in a Championship match? Whitechurch never took the foot off the pedal and held their dominance throughout. Conor Kelleher fired over another free before Philip O'Connell hit his second point from play. Two further substitutions for Whitechurch followed before the end with Brian Cahill replacing Michael Meade and Damien Kenneally replacing Philip O'Connell. Na Piarsaigh goaled for the second time following a goal mouth scramble before John O'Callaghan completed the scoring hitting his nineth point of the evening to leave the score line Whitechurch 0.18 - Na Piarsaigh 2.02. This was a convincing gutsy win by the team and with a strong panel can too progress further in the Championship. The first hurdle has been completed successfully and injury free. Well done to all concerned.

We wish the team continued success in the Championship.

Junior A Hurler's loose out to Mayfield in League Final. (Vincents Sunday December 18th)

Whitechurch 0.05 - Mayfield 0.08

Not the ideal time of the year for a league final but none the less its the same conditions for both teams. Whitechurch appeared to adapt the best early on and hit 2 points in the opening 2 minutes. The first a free from Peter O'Driscoll and the second a well taken point from play by Kevin Buckley. Mayfield's opening score came after 6 minutes from a brillantly taken side line ball. The opening quarter was dominated by Whitechurch with John O'Connell and Brian O'Sullivan proving very effective in the backline while Peter Lynch was winning the mid field battle. A well worked move involving Paul O'Sullivan and Peter O'Driscoll saw Whitechurch regain the 2 point lead. Peter hit over another free and Whitechurch were looking good on 18 minutes having a 3 point lead. Several other chances came our way but failed to score. Mayfield having been let off the hook on a few occasions began to claw their way back into the game and on 26 minutes were right back in the game having hit 2 points one from play and one from a free. Whitechurch were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half time but a good save from Richard O'Keeffe saw the ball cleared. This gave Mayfield further belief as they ended the half only one point in arrears 0.04 - 0.03.

Mayfield took over in the opening of the second half and took the lead for the first time after 3 minutes following 2 points from play. Brian O'Sullivan was continuing to battle hard and so too was Seanie O'Gorman. Patrick Casey replaced William Casey in an attempt to change the game. However our scoring chances in the second half were limited. In fact Whitechurch went 38 minutes of play without getting a score. Murt Kelleher replaced Peter Lynch on 18 minutes. Mayfield hit a further point from play to stretch the lead 0.06 - 0.04. A couple of half chances came to Whitechurch but on the day did not materialise. Mayfield scored another point before Colm Sheahan pointed a free to leave 2 the margin. Unfortunately that was to be the last score from Whitechurch and Mayfield pointed another free to leave the sides Whitechurch 0.05 - Mayfield 0.08. Seanie Murnane replaced Conor Buckley with 5 minutes remaining. On the day Whitechurch can have no complaints about loosing. Whitechurch had chances in the opening half to take a commanding lead but unfortunately it didn't happen. However full credit to Mayfield on their victory.

The team lined out as follows:

Brian Murphy

John O'Connell - Seanie O'Gorman - Patrick O'Driscoll

John Drummy - Brian O'Sullivan- Victor O'Sullivan

Colm Sheahan(0.01) - Peter Lynch

Peter O'Driscoll(0.03) - Eoin Murnane - William Casey

Conor Buckley - Kevin Buckley(0.01) - Paul O'Sullivan

Subs: Roy O'Driscoll - Michael Meade - Patrick Casey(for William Casey) - Murt Kelleher(for Peter Lynch) - Seanie Murnane(for Conor Buckley) - Brendan Murnane - Ian Lee.

Under 21B Hurling Championship Final.

Whitechurch 0.12 - Mayfield 0.10(Ballinlough Saturday 03/12/05)

After a 12 year wait Whitechurch were crowned City U-21 Hurling Champions. As one would expect at this time of the year, conditions were far from perfect for hurling. However Whitechurch adapted well and were deserved winners following a hard fought battle against Mayfield.

It was Mayfield who opened the scoring in the second minute from a free. Even in the poor conditions Paul O'Sullivan's skill and pace was evident after he pointed the equalizer following a great run. If one brother can do it, then so can the other and within a minute Brain O'Sullivan caught a great ball at centre back and took off on the run and struck a great point from play. The Whitechurch full back line was constantly under pressure from Mayfield puck outs as goalkeeper Richard O'Kee f fe landed each one in the square. The sides were on level terms on 10 minutes at 3 points each with the third Whitechurch point coming from a Peter O'Driscoll free. The first real goal threat came for Whitechurch after Conor Buckley hit the post having got through the defence. Colm Sheahan picked up the rebound and pointed. Dylan Burke was keeping a close eye on things in goal and read a few early situations very well ensuring a clean sheet was kept. Brother's Roy and Patrick O'Driscoll were combining very effectively at corner and wing back positions and were making it very difficult for their markers. Mayfield dominated play for the last 8 minutes of the half but didn't get the scores as the Whitechurch back line stood solid with Victor O'Sullivan hitting long relieving clearances. It looked like the half would end even at 5 points each but Mayfield were awarded a 65 which they converted to give them a 6 point to 5 lead.

Whitechurch opened the second half with a 65 of their own which Peter converted. Eoin Murnane was proving very effective up front and following hard work and blocking down a defender's clearance he managed to get the ball to Peter who slotted over a great point. Things were looking up for Whitechurch but it was early stages yet. Their attitude on the pitch was very positive and it was evident on the line that this was team performance and the players were working for each other. Patrick Casey and Colm Sheahan at centre field were not shy and moved the ball well. Mid way through the second half the sides were level again on eight points each. The Murnane brothers combined to give Whitechurch the lead and again following hard individual work Eoin passed to Brendan who pointed from the wing. John Scanlon is renowned for long pucks but his 80-yard free with 12 minutes remaining was inspirational and gave Whitechurch a 2-point lead. Whitechurch with 10 minutes remaining were looking the stronger and for the first time in the game a lead of more than 2 points was achieved following a great s trike from Eoin Murnane. Michael Meade replaced Ian lee. Sharp shooter Peter O'Driscoll pointed a great score from the wing to give Whitechurch a 4-point lead. Mayfield tried to up the pace but were denied. Dylan Burke caught a great ball with 3 minutes remainin g to relieve the pressure. Mayfield pointed from a free to leave a 3-point gap. Whitechurch backs were outstanding throughout the game but in particular for the closing 10 minutes. Mayfield managed another point from play. Two points is a very dangerous lead to have but it was going to take something really special from Mayfield to the get the better of the Whitechurch backs. Brian O'Sullivan caught a mighty ball at the end of the game to ensure a Whitechurch victory. The final score finished Whitechurch 0. 12 - Mayfield 0.10.

Whitechurch deserved their victory. They finished the stronger and showed commitment throughout the full game. This particular bunch of players have great potential and hopefully this is only the start of things to come. On behalf of the Club we would like to congratulate the team and the mentors on a great victory and thank you for taking the cup back to Whitechurch.

The team lined out as follows.

Under 21 Hurling Championship semi Final.

Whitechurch 0.11 - Nemo Rangers 0.07(19/11/05 Redmonds)

"Whitechurch advance to a City Final clash with Mayfield following a 4 point victory over Nemo Rangers in Redmonds GAA pitch Saturday 19/11/05"

Conditions were not suitable for open fast hurling but both teams over came the elements and produced an entertaining game of hurling. Scores were hard to come by and place balls accounted for a high percentage. It was Nemo who opened the score following a well taken free in the opening minute. Whitechurch were slow to start but levelled on 6 minutes following a Peter O'Driscoll free. Brian O'Sullivan at centre back started strong and commanded his area. A well worked move involving Colm Sheahan - Peter O'Driscoll and finished off by Conor Buckley gave Whitechurch the lead on 10 minutes. Nemo Rangers keeper pulled off a point blank save from Conor Buckley to lift their side but Colm Sheahan responded for Whitechurch to hit a fantastic point from play. Both sides swapped frees before Nemo hit their first point from play to leave 2 the margin. Nemo hit a dominant patch but were unable to convert the scores with theWhitechurch backs tipping the balance. Eoin Murnane replaced Michael Meade with 4 minutes remaining in the half. However Nemo finished the half as they started by pointing a free to leave one the margin Whitechurch 0.05 - Nemo 0.04.

Nemo hit the opening point of the half to draw level from a free but Whitechurch hit back almost immediately with a Peter O'Driscoll free. Colm Sheahan was commanding the centre of the field and delivered some well placed ball to the forward line to feed Brendan Murnane and Paul O'Sullivan. It wasnt long before O'Sullivan hit the first of his 2 points to stretch the lead. Eoin Murnanes introduction to the game paid dividends and swung the advantage in our favuor and he pointed well from a Colm Sheahan pass.. A quickly taken free from Peter shortly after to Eoin saw Whitechurch take a 4 point lead 0.09- 0.05 Nemo battled and put on the pressure but couldnt break down the Whitechurch defence. Patches of scrappy play were evident from both sides but in fairness conditions were not the best. Peter O'Driscoll and Paul O'Sullivan were showing their pace even in the heavy conditions. Nemo hit one back to leave a 3 point margin with 6 minutes remaining. Whitechurch were guilty of 2 bad wides in the closing minutes and on the stroke of full time Paul O'Sullivan hit his second point to leave the final score Whitechurch 0.11 - Nemo Rangers 0.07.

Whitechurch now meet Mayfield in the final. Date and venue to be decided.

McCurtain Cup Final

Whitechurch 1.09 - Mayfield 0.15. (Ballinlough Sunday October 09th 2005)

In a lack lustre match far off Championship pace Whitechurch went down by 3 points to Mayfield. Conditions were blustery and both teams were guilty of basic mistakes. All bar one score in the first half were from place balls. A grand total of 15 frees were awarded in the first half with Mayfield scoring 6 points and Whitechuch hitting 4. The only score from play was a cracking goal from Brian O'Sullivan on 23 minutes to give Whitechurch the lead for the first time 1.03 - 0.05. Whitechurch played against the breeze in the opening half and had the advantage of a single point lead at the break.1.04 - 0.06. Whitechurch backs were put under pressure in the opening 30 minutes but held up well with Brian Murphy in goal leading by example along with Seanie O'Gorman and John O'Connell with Paul O'Sullivan winning alot of possession in attack.

The pace upted slightly in the second half and Peter O'Driscoll gave Whitechurch a 2 point lead following yet another free. The first point from play was scored by Mayfield after 35 minutes following a mistake in the Whitechurch back line. Eoin Murnane replaced Peter Lynch on 37 minutes had added a threat to the Whitechurch attack. Both teams exchanged points and following a goal mouth scramble Whitechurch keeper Brian Murphy received a nasty cut to the face and had to be replaced by Ian Lee.Scores were exchanged between teams and John O'Connell was getting the upper hand of his marker and cleared alot of ball from defence. Mayfield got on top for the last quarter following basic errors from Whitechurch and a couple of missed chances. With 10 minutes remaining Mayfield drew level but Whitechurch responded with with a well taken point by Peter following a great move and pass from Eoin Murnane. Donacha Murnane was replaced by William Casey with 8 minutes to go. Tit for tat again and Whitechurch took a single point lead following a great point from Kevin Buckley. Mayfield hit 4 points in the last 4 minutes to win by 3. A game we can look back on and say "we should have won" but the score board reads a different story.

Minor A Hurling Final Replay (Ballinlough Tuesday August 02nd 2005)

Whitechurch 1.11 - Vincents 3.10

"Vincents were always going to be up for this game, having salvaged a late equalising point in the drawn game, momentum was in their favor and they started the replay as they finished the drawn game."

Vincents played with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half and opened up a two point lead within five minutes. Peter O' Driscoll pointed a fabulous 70 yard free against the breeze to narrow to one but this was the closest Whitechurch came to their rivals as Vincents took full advantage of the breeze and looked a sharper, more determined outfit in the opening half. Johnathan Scanlon's interception on 10 minutes prevented a definite goal but unfortunately one minute later full forward Paul Ingle crashed the ball to the net for Vincents first goal. Both sides guilty of wides. Any wide for Whitechurch handed advantage back to Vincents as Cullinanes puck outs landed on top of the Whitechurch full back line. However credit to all of the backline who coped extremely well under pressure. Sure mistakes were made as Vincents landed in ball after ball. A piece of magic from Paul O'Sullivan saw his superb snap shot brilliantly saved by Vincents keeper Aidan O' Brien. On another day that would have been a definite goal but unfortunately not the case. Then disaster struck when a deflected ball following a long range puck out ended up in the Whitechurch net. No fault to Shane in goal as he was left helpless in the situation. Instead of 1.01 - 1.03 it was now an eight point margin in favor of Vincents 0.01 - 2.03. Vincents were dominating in most key positions. John Scanlons 80 yard pointed free gave a lift to the team but Vincents kept focused and hit 4 points without reply. Shane Cahill pulled off a fabulous save to match O' Brien earlier save from O' Sullivan to keep Whitechurch in the game and Colm Keane pointed 2 minutes before the break. Denver Murphy picked up the breaking ball following another full pitch length puck out from Cullinane and crashed the ball to the net to give a 13 point margin. Peter reduced that to 12 following a free on the stroke of half time to leave the scores Whitechurch 0.04 - Vincents 3.07.

" The breeze was definitely a factor in the opening half but Vincents looked sharper were physically stronger and played the better hurling."

The big question to be answered was would Whitechurch drop their heads or battle on, and true to the character of this team they fought to the bitter end and tried to pull off a miraculous recovery. As expected Whitechurch opened the second half on top. They reduced the margin by 2 points early on following one free and one from play by Peter. Unfortunately while playing with a breeze and 10 points down one cannot afford silly wides and Whitechurch were guilty of some bad wides in this critical period of the game. This gave heart to Vincents who were still very highly motivated with one on the cup and not willing to let it go. Glimmer of light for Whitechurch following a piece of magic from Peter after he crashed the ball to the net following the rebound from his own 21 yard free. Now the score was down to 8 points 1.07 - 3.09. Critical time in the match and a time when Whitechurch needed to apply more pressure and reduce the margin. Paul O' Sullivan was just the man to do that and on 52 minutes had broke through the defence and unleashed another rocket which scraped outside the post and wide. Lady luck not on our side. Conor McAuliffe replaced David Kiely, with McAuliffe taking up wing back and Brian Cahill moving to corner forward. Brian added the next point to reduce to 7 with 10 minutes remaining. To the credit of Whitechurch they never gave up, the game was still there for the winning but when Vincents keeper O' Brien saved another rocket from O' Sullivan, it looked like show over as the rub of the green was in Vincents favor. But you make your own luck and Vincents deserved their win and we wish then continued success in the county. Whitechurch hit 3 further points from Peter, two from 65s and one free to leave the final score Whitechurch 1.11 - Vincents 3.10

"Unfortunately we will have to wait another year to try and win this Minor title, and with most of them under age again next year and a bit of luck we will achieve the ultimate. This group of lads have character and are a well disciplined group and will achieve their goa ls. The Club would like to thank the team and mentors for their efforts throughout the year."

Minor A Hurling Final(Ballinlough Tuesday July 19th2005)

Whitechurch 4.07 - Vincents 1.16

" Sides must meet again following a thrilling encounter in Ballinlough. Both sides had chances to take the spoils but at the end of the day a draw was a fair result."

Two points in the opening minute set the tone for the evening. Paul O' Sullivan for W/CH and John Neville for Vincents. Alan King put Vincents in front before O'Sullivan went on the first of many solo runs, had the initial shot saved by O' Brien but found the net on the rebound. Just the tonic W/CH needed to settle the side. However Vincents responded and kept focused with Anthony Fenton picking up a lot of loose ball in midfield and he hit vincents third point from play on 6minutes to leave one the margin. Peter O' Driscoll pointed a 40 yard free after Dylan Burke was fouled. O' Driscoll was involved in the next score after he passed to Colm Keane who pointed on the run. W/CH on top but Vincents took over for the next few minutes and Alan King operating at wing forward hit 2 points to level the sides 0.06 - 1.03. Anthony O' Callaghan gave Vincents the lead after hitting point number 7. W/CH under pressure and hit 2 bad wides from scoreable positions. There was a lull in the scoring from both sides and we went 7 minutes without either side recording a point until Vincents broke the deadlock on 22 minutes through wing forward Kelly who slotted over to give a 2 point lead. W/CH pointed another free after danger man O' Sullivan was fouled. Johnathan Scanlon at centre back was playing a stormer with David Hegarty on top in the corner. Goal number 2 on 25 minutes from no other than O' Sullivan put W/CH 2.04 - 0.08 in front . Vincents missed a close in free and it looked as if W/CH would take two point lead into the break, but a misplaced hand pass by W/CH eventually ended with Alan King who blasted from close range on the stroke of half time to give Vincents a one point lead . Vincents 1.08 - Whitechurch2.04.

"An entertaining first half was enjoyed by all with good scores coming from both sides. Worrying from a Whitechurch perspective was the free space given to Vincents players. Only one point the difference with Vincents aided by a breese in the opening half."

As he did in the opening of the first half Paul O' Sullivan opened the scoring following point of the game as he flicked over the ball following a long delivery from Brendan Murnane. O' Sullivan was proving a real threat to the Vincents backline. Brian Boland who received an injury to his ankle in the first half was replaced by Paul Walsh as the injury didn' t heal. A big blow to W/CH as Brian was commanding in his position . Vincents again regained a two point lead following 2 points from James White in 2 minutes. Vincents turn to get on top again, and they appeared to be in the driving seat until O' Sullivan rattled the net for goal number 3 the after Johnathan Scanlon delivered a long ball from the heart of the full back line. Scanlon and Lee had now swapped positions and with the aid of the breese Scanlon' s long range pucks were very effective and always put pressure on the Vincents defence. W/CH stretched the lead to 2 following a free from Peter to leave the scores W/CH 3.06 - Vincents 1.10. Don Duggan at midfield was battling hard, chasing opponents and generally making life difficult for his marker and was proving effective. Vincents applied pressure on the W/CH backs and were guilty of a couple of bad wides before pointing a close in free. Level terms again on 48 minutes following a Denver Murphy point 3.06 - 1.12. Tonic for W/CH after Paul O' Sullivan latched onto a breaking ball in the full forward line to score his third and Whitechurch's fourth. Was this to be our day at last? But credit to Vincents who never gave up and battled back each time W/CH scored a goal. Again another mistake in a pass was intercepted by Fenton who narrowed the W/CH lead to 2 again. Paul Cullinane hi t a 65 and the game was back in the melting pot`. Both sides hit a few nervous wides and it looked as if the sides were level after a Denver Murphy shot but some how Shane Cahill leaped off the ground and grabbed the ball as it was about to go over. In reality a fantastic piece of goalkeeping. Brendan Murnane looked to have the match sealed after he pointed in the last minute to following a Peter O' Driscoll pass. Vincents pointed a close in free two minutes into injury time and it looked as if W/CH were going to win by the narrowest of margins but Paul Cullinane leveled with the last puck of the game five minutes into injury time to leave the sides tied at 4.07 - 1.16.

"In reality no team deserved to loose, W/CH can feel grieved over the extra time question but on the balance both teams deserve another bash at the title. Congratulations to both teams on serving up an entertaining, hard, fair match and we look forward to the replay. We wish our team success in the replay and hopefully take the cup back to Wh itechurch."

Junior A Hurling Championship(Ballinlough Sunday July 17th 2005)

Whitechurch 0.17 - Na Piarsaigh 3.13

"Goals win matches and this certainly was true in this Championship encounter. Despite having out scored our opponents with respect to the number of scores we find ourselves out of the 2005 championship but we wish Na Piarsaigh the best of the luck in the remainder of the championship"

Conditions were hot in Ballinlough and fitness was going to prove a big factor. Whitechurch opened the scoring through Brian O' Sullivan straight from the throw in. Early pressure was applied by W/CH but no scores followed. Na Piarsaigh were awarded 2 frees in the 3rd and 4th minute but converted only one to level the game. W/CH on top in the opening encounters with Donacha Murnane working hard in midfield, he executed a pass to peter O' Driscoll who pointed from play and Peter followed with a 65 two minutes later to leave a 2 point margin. On the 14th minute the sides were back level after Na Piarsaigh hit 2 points, one from play and one from a free. Na Piarsaigh backs were beginning to win a lot of possession which resulted in pressure in the W/CH backline. However following a great move involving John Drummy, Murt Kelleher and finished by Donacha W/CH regained a one point lead. (0.04 - 0.03). On 21 minutes disaster for W/CH as the first Na Piarsaigh goal was scored. The ball was crossed into the square and in error the ball was deflected into the W/CH net. Na Piarsaigh took the lead from here on in. A strange decision by the referee resulted in a free to Na Piarsaigh after Gerry O' Reilly was deemed to have taken too many steps which resulted ina point and a second free a minutes later was also converted to leave the scores Na Piarsaigh 1.05 - W/CH 0.04. Conor Buckley converted a W/CH free on 26 minutes but this was wiped out following a mix up in the defence where the ball was passed directly to an oncoming Na Piarsaigh forward who pointed at his ease. Conor then hit free number 2 after Kevin was fouled on the way through but Na Piarsaigh responded with a great point from play. Eoin Murnane came on for William Casey just before the break and Peter O' Driscoll completed the first half scoring from a free to leave the sides Na Piarsaigh 1.07 - Whitechurch 0.07.

"The all important goal separated the teams at the break. Both sides guilty of conceding frees and missed chances. Both sides hit 3 points from play and four from frees but Na Piarsaigh got that all important goal. In the first half Na Piarsaigh settled better and were commanding in key positions with Whitechurch struggling to get scores."

W/CH started the second half strong and immediately reduced the deficit to two following a free from Peter O' Driscoll after Murt was fouled. The real turning point occurred in the next 6 minutes when W/CH missed 2 scoreable chances and should have drawn level but didn' t. Instead Na Piarsaigh replied and hit goal number 2 following confusion in the W/CH back line. Now 5 points the margin and W/CH were lucky not to concede a third after the ball was pulled on in the square, bounced and went over the bar. For these few minutes W/CH were totally out of the game and trailed 2.08 - 0.08). W/CH tried to get back in the game but couldn' t get the scores and hit 2 further bad wides. On 40 minutes Na Piarsaigh opened a commanding 9 point lead following their third goal with things really looking bad for W/CH. John O' Connell replaced Donal Kelly. Both teams swapped points, W/CH from a Peter O' Driscoll free while Na Piarsaigh from play 3.09 -0.09. Seanie O' Gorman was battling hard from the full back position. Na Piarsaigh stretched the lead to 10 points following a great point from play. Eoin Murnane hit his first point following a pass from Brian O' Sullivan before Na Piarsaigh hit back with another free. W/CH never gave up, even at 10 points down the side kept battling and Kevin Buckley hit over a great individual point to leave 9 the margin. The remaining 10 minutes were dominated by W/ CH hitting 6 points to their 2 but unfortunately we hit a few bad wides also. Points from Kevin Buckley, John Drummy, Conor Buckley, Brian O'Sullivan and the final score from Seanie Murnane ompleted the days scoring to leave the final score Whitechurch 0.17 - Na Piarsaigh 3.13.

"Whitechurch finished strong and can be proud of the fact they never game up even at 10 points down. They battled on but unfortunately left it too late and Na Piarsaigh ran out 5 point winners. Whitechurch can have no complaints as on the day, as Na Piarsaigh won fair and square in a tough battle of hurling and under extremely hot weather conditions. We wish them the best of luck in the remainder of the championship. W e would like to thank the Whitechurch team and mentors for the work they put in this year to date. Without these efforts the Club would not exist. We wish the Junior A team continued success in the league where they currently are joint top, the under 21 Championship team who play Vincent's. We also wish the best to our Minor A hurlers who play Vincent's in the final in Ballinlough next Tuesday July 19th."

Minor A Hurling Semi-Final

Whitechurch 2.15 - Nemo Rangers 2.09(Rathpeacon Thursday 14th July 205)

"Whitechurch now meet St Vincent's in the City A minor hurling next Tuesday night July 19th in Ballinlough at 7.15pm following an impressive win over Nemo in Rathpeacon. The game was played at a rip roaring pace with great skill on display from both sides. The game was enjoyed by the large attendance who witnessed a Whitechurch team dig deep to pull off a well deserved victory."

Nemo played the first half aided with a strong breese and opened up a 2 point lead after 7 minutes, one from a free and one from play. Nemo were dominant in the opening minutes and their physical strength was evident. Whitechurch slowly began to match their opponents and most importantly never let them out of sight. Whitechurch were on level terms on 10minutes following 2 points from play. The first from Colm Keane following a pin point pass from Perter O' Driscoll and the second from Brian Cahill following a short 65 free. Whitechurch were given a further lift following a spectacular catch from Brendan Murnane in midfield and the resulting puck went straight to the net to give Whitechurch a 1.02 to 0.02 advantage. Nemo took the imitative and replied with a point. Paul O'Sullivan who was outstanding on the night took off on one of his blistering runs, was fouled (advantage should have been played) but unfortunately the resulting free was hit wide. On the 17th minute Nemo were awarded a penalty after goalkeeper Shane Cahill fouled the ball in the small square(To my knowledge this is not a penalty and should be a 21 yard free, but one must obey the referee whether right or wrong). Nemo converted the penalty and followed almost immediately with a well taken point from their corner forward to take a 2 point lead. 2 point leads seemed to be the norm in the first half and Whitechurch drew level on 26 minutes following 2 frees from Peter O' Driscoll Again Nemo replied with a point and Peter leveled following another free. Nemo went in at half time 1.06 to 1.05 after taking the lead on the stroke of the break.

Very little separated the teams with Whitechurch beginning to get on top in some key areas. Johnathan Scanlon and Brian Boland in defence, Peter and Brendan in midfield while up front Colm Keane Paul O'Sullivan and Don Duggan always looked dangerous. Big second half needed if Whitechurch were to topple Nemo and this they done in great style.

Whitechurch aided with the breese in the second half were unlucky not to get a goal in the opening minute of the second half but instead it was Nemo who stretched their lead to 2 points following a free. Frees were swapped after Peter was fouled and Peter obliged to leave one the margin. Whitechurch rearranged things slightly and Don Duggan's move to mid field proved very effective. Whitechurch free and Peter leveled the sides yet again on 1.07 each. Tragedy struck for Whitechurch 8 minutes in the half following the dismissal of Johnathan O'Sullivan following an altercation near the sideline. Paul O'Sullivan showed what Whitechurch were made of and pointed a fantastic point which lifted the team. The Whitechurch response to being one man down was brillant "The hearts of 14 men will beat 15" and in a 10 minute spell Whitechurch played the best hurling witnessed in a long time. During this spell Whitechurch scored 1.05 to Nemo's 0.01. Starting with two 65s from Peter O'Driscoll whose experience was starting to show gave Whitechurch a 2 point lead 1.10 - 1.08. Peter added 2 further frees following hard grafting from Paul O'Sullivan and Richard Sherlock. Whit echurch looked like the team with 15 by the way their were playing. Dylan Burke slotted over his first point after great work from Brian Cahill to leave the scores Whitechurch 1.12 - Nemo 1.08 (the biggest lead in the game) On the 18 th minute Alan Corcoran replaced Sean C Burke and Whitechurch were unlucky not to stretch to a 5 point lead after a 70 yard free went narrowly wide. Ian Lee now playing at centre back following a direct swap with Johnathan for the second half was taking control of the position . Colm Keane too was effective in his new role in the half back line. Brian Cahill having also moved to defence was proving a handful for his opponent. Paul O'Sullivan hit another brilliant point before Richard Sherlock burst through and found himself one on one with the keeper and rightly kicked to the net to give an incredible 8 point lead 2.13 - 1.08. Whitechurch couldn't sustain such dominance and Nemo came back with a burst. Shane Cahill pulled off a point blank save to keep Nemo at bay. Following a couple minutes of constant Nemo pressure they eventually found the net to give them a glimmer of hope and reduce the deficit to 5 points and were awarded a free which they converted to leave the scores 2.13 to 2.09. Whitechurch battled and Sherlock had a goal opportunity tapped out for a 65 by the Nemo keeper which O'Driscoll pointed to regain a 5 point lead.Paul O'Sullivan was unlucky not to find the net following a great individual effort and Dylan Burke completed the scoring to leave the final score Whitechurch 2.15 Nemo Rangers 2.09.

A great display of hurling was shown by both teams but Whitechurch deserved their victory showing determination, passion and above a will to win. We wish the team the best of luck in the final against St Vincents. The team lined out as follows.

Junior A Hurling Championship.

Whitechurch 0.19 - Glen Rovers 0.05(Ballinlough Sunday June 19th 11am)

" As the score board reads hurdle one of the 2005 Championship completed with relevant ease. The most important words being hurdle one. This is only one step and should Whitechurch progress further they will need to convert all of their scoreable chances"

Conditions were perfect for fast open hurling in Ballinlough (too hot if anything). Whitechurch opened the strongest but hit 3 bad wides in the opening 4 minutes. It took a Conor Buckley free in the 05th minute to settle the side and open the scoring. Whitechurch were dominant in the opening encounters with Murt Kelleher controlling the centre back position with Brian O'Sullivan looking dangerous. Conor Buckley was causing grief for the Glen corner back and slotted over a great point from play before Peter Lynch pointed a mighty free from 80 yards to rally the troops further. Total dominance in the opening 15 minutes but only 3 points the reward. Philip O'Connell stretched the lead to 04 points following a well worked set piece from a John Meade sideline ball to Brian O'Sullivan to Philip. Conor Buckley pointed his second free shortly afterwards. Peter Lynch received a blow to the head and Paul O'Sullivan was intoduced as a blood sub to taste his first Junior Championship action. Conor hit his third free and 5 points were the margin. Paul O'Sullivan was immediately in the action and set up Conor Buckley for his second point from play. Eoin Murnane was fouled and Buckley pointed yet again from the place ball to leave 8 the margin. Glen Rovers managed 2 points before the break (both frokm frees) to leave the margin 6 at the interval. Witechurch 0.08 - Glen Rovers 0.02.

Overall the first half should have produced more scores for the amopnt of possesion available to Whitechurch. The Whitechurch Full Back line dealt well with the amount of ball received and with the half back line of Donal Kelly - Murt Kelleher and John Drummy stopped the ball from reaching the Glen Full forward line.

Peter Lynch returned at the start of the second half (wearing a helmet) following treatment for the head injury received in the first half. The opening 10 minutes in any half of a game are vital and Whitechurch again opened the stronger with Brian O'Sullivan hitting over a fabulous point. The Glen were reduced to 14 following the dismissal of their corner forward. Whitechurch appeared at 6s and 7s for a few minutes and during this period Glen Rovers hit their first point from play top leave 6 points the margin (0.09 - 0.03). The sideline made changes and put Jason Kelly as the extra man in front of the full back line. Whitechurch upped a gear and hit 3 points without reply. The first of these resulted from a brillant move involving Donal Kelly - Philip O'Connell and finished off by Brian O'Sullivan. The second came from Murt Kelleher who read the play exceptionally well and taken the pass from Philip O'Connell pointed from 40 yards. Sharp shooter Buckley slotted over another free to leave 9 the margin (12 - 03). Conor hit another from play before Eoin Murnane pointed from a practically impossible angle. The Glen folllowed with a point of their own but Whitechurch never looked back. Philip O'Connell caught a wonderful ball and passed to Peter Lynch who slotted between the posts. Conor Buckley hit 2 further points from play within a minute to leave the Glen dazzled. Not having seen much of the ball keeper O'Reilly made a fine save to ensure a clean sheet. Whitechurch took their foot off the pedal in the closing 10 minutes however Glen had no answer. Following an altercation Whitechurch were reduced to 14 and Glen Rovers reduced to 13 with 8 minutes remaining. Paul O'Sullivan replaced Donal Kelly. John Meade and Philip O'Connell hit 2 further poins before the Glen completed the scoring with a point of their own to leave the final score Whitechurch 0.19 - Glen Rovers 0.05.

Job well done and Whitechurch deserved their victory as they were much sharper, more determined and disciplined than their counterparts but alot more work need to be done if we are to progress further in the Championship.

Whitechurch 3.13 - Bandon 2.13

"Whitechurch finished out winner's in a highly entertaining , high scoring, hard fought encounter against Bandon in the opening non exam minor league campaign on saturday night in Whitechurch".

Bandon with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half opened up a 2 point lead within 5 minutes. Paul O' Sullivan pointed a free for Whitechurch on 8 minutes. Bandon centre forward Brian Crowley proved accurate from place balls and pointed a 65 and a 40 yard free to put Bandon 4 points to 1 up. Bandon corner forward Eoin O'Donavan was causing problems and slotted over a well taken point. Whitechurch switched David McCarthy from corner back to corner forward with Brian Boland, within a minute David Kiely and David McCarthy combined for the first goal of the game to leave a single point between the teams. Whitechurch drew level within a minute following a well worked move, starting with full back Ian Lee and finishing up with Paul O'Sullivan who executed a great point on the run. Killer blow for Whitechurch followed after Bandon full forward Eamon Brennan caught a high ball, turned and kicked to the net. Both centre field pairings were contesing a tough battle with determination and hard work evident on both sides, in particular Don Duggan and Dylan Burke were starting to win possession. Bandon rallied and hit three well taken points from play by Brian Crowley, Jason McCarthy and Eamon Brennan to leave the scores 1-10 to 1-07. Paul O'Sullivan was unlucky on 8 minutes having blasted into the side netting folllowing a great run. John Scanlon pointed a long range free and Bandon replied through Eoin O'Donavan following a great solo effort. The tonic which Whitechurch required followed almost immediately after a Dylan Burke free landed in the square where Richard Sherlock finished to the net to level the scores 1-11 to 2-08. Brian Crowley put Bandon back into the lead after a well taken point. Sean Ryan replaced David McCarthy with Anthony O'Sullivan replacing David Hegarty for Whitechurch. Tough challenges were exchanged between both sides. The game was physical at times but fair with only one booking. If Brian Crowley was accurate from place balls for Bandon, John Scanlon excelled in place balls for Whitechurch and this was a vital ingredient in the victory for Whitechurch. Second killer blow for Whitechurch followed after Bandon full forward Eamon Brennan passed to Jason McCarthy who blasted to the net and Bandon regained a three point lead 2-12 to 2.09. John Scanlon now operating at full back having swapped with Ian Lee hit two valuable points one from play and one from a free to leave one point margin. Brian Crowley pointed to give Bandon a two point lead with two minutes to go. Whitechurch never panicked and the reliable Scanlon hit two fabolous frees under pressure to level the scores with seconds remaining. They say goal win matches and following a goalmouth scramble from a Scanlon free the ball crossed the line. The final whistle was blown within seconds to give Whitechurch a 3-13 to 2-13 victory. Determined, Well Organised Under 16 Hurler's Outclass Mayfield in League Final (Ballinlough 28/11/04)

Whitechurch 1.09 - Mayfield 2.02

"The jinks of Ballinlough was lifted on Sunday morning after the Under 16 hurlers of Whitechurch outclassed a fancied Mayfield Team. First half dominance lead the way to a well deserved victory. Whitechurch held Mayfield scoreless from the 18th minute to the last minute where they hit 2 late goals."

Surface conditions were heavy which made it difficult for crisp fast hurling. The opening couple of chances fell to Mayfield but they failed to capitalise. Shane Cahill plucked a couple of high balls from the air and cleared well. The opening score came after 5 minutes following a great clearance from Paul Walsh, the ball eventually falling to Paul O'Sullivan who slotted between the posts. Colm Keane doubled the lead within a minute after Brian Boland cleared the lines in defence. Whitechurch were enjoying a period of dominance in the first quarter and after Colm Keane was fouled on 10 minutes Paul O'Sullivan pointed the resulting free. Shortly after Paul O'Sullivan's individual effort rebounded off the post. Mayfield pointed from a free on 11 minutes. Whitechurch responded after great work from Colm Kean who sent in a super ball across the square where George Osborne finished to the net. Mayfield hit their second point on 18 minutes to leave the scores 1.03 - 0.02. Shane Cahill was again called into action and responded to the cause fielding another high ball to deny Mayfield. Whitechurch backs were on top with the half back line of Sherlock - Scanlon and Boland cutting off the supply to the Mayfield full forward line. Whitechurch upped a gear and pressurised Mayfield for the coming minutes. Whitechurch hit 4 wides a in row before John Scanlon hit a 65 over the bar to get a well deserved score following all the posession. A close in free just before half time which Paul O'Sullivan pointed to leave the scores Whitechurch 1.05 - Mayfield 0.02 at the break. Whitechurch well deserved their 6 point lead at the interval.

The second half was just seconds old when Whitechurch were awarded a free from centre field which John Scanlon pointed. The perfect start to the half. Mayfield made a few switches to try and counteract the Whitechurch dominance. Whitechurch full back line of Hegarty - Lee and Walsh were called on and they answered the call, in particular Ian Lee's strenght and big clearances broke the hearts of the Mayfield forwards. Both sides were guilty of missed opportunities from frees and play in the third quarter. It wasn't until the 23rd minute of the second half when the next score registered. Thankfully it was from Whitechurch midfielder Paul O'Sullivan to stretch the lead 1.07 - 0.02. Don Duggan was proving a handfull for Mayfield in winning alot of ball and not giving his marker much space. Mayfield had a goal chance cleared off the line and good combination work between Boland and Sherlock releaved the pressure. The "in form" Colm Keane was fouled 40 yards from goal. The resulting free was uncharacteristically hit wide by Paul O'Sullivan. A fast puck out from Mayfield found Paul O'Sullivan all alone and he pointed at ease to stretch the lead to 9 points 1.08 - 0.02. Dave McCarthy replaced Sean C and Conor McAuliffe replaced Michael Osborne. Colm Keane was again fouled on way to goal and Paul O'Sullivan split the posts to give a 10 point lead. Sean Ryan replaced George Osborne and Anthony O'Sullivan replaced Dylan Burke. On the stroke of full time Mayfield were awarded a free which was sent into the square resulting in a goal following a goal mouth scramble and with the last puck of the game Mayfield goaled for a second time to leave the final score Whitechurch 1.09 - Mayfield 2.02.

On the balance of play Whitechurch were far the better team. They were organised, focused and committed to winning. This was a just reward for a team who trained regularly and put in a huge effort throughout the year. To all the players well done and congratulations on winning the League. To the management team of Patsy Hegarty, Robby Boland, Ray Burke and John Scanlon a huge thanks and well done on bringing success to the club. Under-21 City Hurling Final (Ballinlough 20/11/04).

Whitechurch 2.06 Delaneys 1.10

"Heartbreak in Ballinlough"

It is a bitter bill to take, to loose a final, but to loose by a point is worse. Today's final became the third championship Hurling game where we lost in the last few minutes. As a spectator it is hard to watch and believe, but I can only imagine how hard it must be on players and mentors. It is difficult to be always so close and yet so far. As stated before, that is what sport is all about. There has to be a winner and a looser and I hope our turn at winning will come soon. No words will change the result or comfort the hurt of defeat but well done to all on reaching the final and keeping the Club colours flying.

The game itself was played mainly in good spirit, tough and physical (at times over physical) but that is what you expect at his level. Delaneys opened the scoring with a well hit point after 2 minutes. Whitechurch responded through William Casey who pointed from 40 yards. Shortly after Conor Buckley doubled on a Peter O'Driscoll pass into the net. Severe blow to Whitechurch followed after Peter O'Driscoll received a blow to his hand resulting in a dislocated thumb and sidelined for the remainder of the game. Michael Meade came on for Peter. Ian Lee pulled off a great save which resulted in a 65. Delaneys hit 3 unanswered points. 2 from frees and one 65 to leave the sides level after 17 minutes (1.1 0.04). Shortly after following a defensive mix up Delaneys took the lead after full forward blasted over the bar when a goal was on the cards. Perfect response followed on 20 minutes after Brian O' Sullivan soloed through and blasted to the net to regain a 2 point lead. This was typical of Whitechurch on the day as they played in spurts rather than continuously. The 3 Murnane brothers combined well and Brendan shot over the bar. Whitechurch took a 4 point lead following a Colm Sheahan free and all looked well. An inspirational point from Delaneys midfielder Kevin Foley lifted Delaneys, and on the stroke of full time Delaneys leveled with a goal following a goal mouth scramble to leave the scores 2.03 -1.06 at the break. The standard of free taking and side line cutting from both sides in the opening half was first class. Whitechurch backs were under pressure in the opening half but Roy and Patrick O' Driscoll along with Victor O'Sullivan and Chris Murphy were getting the upper hand. It is said the opening 10 minutes of the second half to any game is critical and Whitechurch were definitely on top here and looked good. 3 unanswered points were hit by Whitechurch in this period. One outstanding point from Donacha Murnane, one from Eoin and a free by Colm Sheahan stretched a 3 point lead 2.06 -1.06. Unfortunately this was our last score. On 23 minutes Delaneys were back on level terms following 2 points from frees and one from play. With 6 minutes remaining Whitechurch were let off the hook following a mix up in the full forward line resulted in a clearance when a goal opportunity fell to Delaneys. Derek O' Connor replaced Michael Meade. Whitechurch were awarded a long range free which was hit narrowly wide. It looked like curtains when Delaneys were awarded a 40 yard free out near the side line but uncharacteristically was hit wide. It looked like we were heading for a draw. Into injury time and an unnecessary free was awarded to Delaneys 40 yards out dead centre of the goal. As expected over the bar. 30 seconds were played and Whitechurch failed to equalize and finished runners up yet again. So near and yet so far. It was critical to win this final, and end the year on a high but it was not to be. Again hard luck lads and well done and Thank You for your efforts throughout the year. We look forward to 2005 and hopefully we can go one step further.

Under-21 Hurling Championship.

Whitechurch 0.15 - Mayfield 0.11(Ballinlough 16/10/2004)

"Whitechurch advance to City Final after gritty display against Mayfield".

Whitechurch welcomed back Brian O'Sullivan after missing the quarter final clash through injury. Brian started strong and was influential in the opening minutes. Mayfied opened the scoring after 3 minutes from a close in free. Peter Lynch made his presence known early on and the equalising point resulted from a good movement involving Peter, Donacha Murnane and finished off by Michael Meade. The puck outs and clearances from the Mayfield goal keeper were immence all landing over the Whitechurch half back line. However the Whitechurch backs for the second game in a row were solid, but at times gave away unnecessary close in frees, another one of these on the 9th minute to put Mayfield back in front. If Mayfield had a good free taker in the their wing forward Whitechurch were equally matched with our wing forward Peter O'Driscoll who leveled matters on 10 minutes from a 65. Pat Casey and Colm Sheahan were winning their battles and cleared alot of ball under pressure. Conor Buckley put Whitechurch ahead on 13 minutes with a well taken point from a narror angle. Within 6 minutes Mayfield hit 4 unanswered points to take a 3 point lead 0.06 - 0.03. and again 2 of these coming from close in frees. Whitechurch upped the game and were awarded a free on 19 minutes which Peter O'Driscoll pointed to narrow the gap to 2 points. Whitechurch pressurised the Mayfield goalmouth but were unable to take full advantage of the possession. Mayfield were awarded a suspect free on 25 minutes which they pointed easily to lead by 3. Whitechuch dug deep and were awarded 2 frees in 3 minutes which Peter pointed to leave a single point between the teams on half time. 0.07 - 0.06. Two minutes into unjury time Mayfield pointed from a free to leave the scores Mayfield 0.08 - Whitechurch 0.06 at the interval.

Mayfield opened the second half as they finished the first and pointed from play in the second minute to stretch the lead to 3 points. Sharp shooter O'Driscoll pointed another free after Brian O'Sullivan was fowled following a good solo run and one minute later O'Driscoll pointed another close in free after Eoin Murnane was fowled having won good possession. Whitechurch were awarded a 65 after Brian O'Sullivan's long range attempt was deflected wide and Peter stepped up to level the match with a well taken place ball. 0.09 - 0.09. Game on but within 2 minutes Mayfield were back in front following another close in free. Score of the match was the equalising point for Whitechuch on 12 minutes following a superb catch from William Casy who broke free and played on Peter O'Driscoll who blasted over the bar to level the game on 10 points each. Victor O'Sullivan, Roy and Patrick O'Driscoll were dominating the back line and Whitechurch appeared to have taken control of the game mid way through the second half. Whitechurch regained the lead for the first time since the 12 minute of the first half after a Peter O'Driscoll free 0.11 - 0.10. Brendan Murnane replaced Michael Meade after 15 minutes. On 17 minutes Peter pointed a super free on the sideline from 55 yards to stretch the lead to 2 points 0.12 - 0.10. Another very well worked point for Whitechurch came on the 23rd minute following a great move involving Eoin Murnane - William Casey - Peter O'Driscoll and put over the bar by Colm Sheahan to leave 3 points the margin in favour of Whitechurch. Mayfield were awarded a 21 yard free shorthly after which they pointed to leave 2 the margin. Mayfield upped the game for a few minutes but Whitechurch mopped up the pressure very well and Ian Lee pulled off a great save to ensure a clean sheet. Whitechurch cleared lines again and were awarded another close in free which Peter tapped over. Whitechurch were in command and the insurance point came one minute from time from the stick of who else only Peter O'Driscoll from a 60 yard free to leave 4 points the margin 0.15 - 0.11. That was the final score and Whitechurch advace to the final where they meet the winners of the other semi-final between Nemo and Delaneys.

This was a game of frees with 8 of 11 for Mayfield and 9 of 15 for Whitechurch. Whitechurch scored 4 point from play with the other 2 from 65s. Whitechurch have improved since the quarter final, however further improvement will be necessary in order to capture the title. Well done to all involved and best of luck in the final. The team lined out as follows:

Patrick Casy - Peter Lynch - Victor O'Sullivan

Under - 21 Hurling Championship.

Whitechurch advance to semi-final encounter clash with Mayfield after an emphatic win over Brian Dillons on a score line of 3.09 to 1.02.

In what turned out to be a rather uneventfull first half Whitechurch lead at half time on a dismal scoreline of 0.03 - 0.01. The scores for Whitechurch came from Donocha Murnane after 16 minutes, Conor Buckley on 28 and William Casey on 30 minutes. The backs stole the show in the first half with Patrick Casey and Victor O'Sullivan in the half back line dominating. The second half was dominated totally by Whitechuch and points from William Casey and Conor Buckley and a goal from Eoin Murnane set Whitechurch on the road for victory. Donnacha Murnane goaled shortly following a long attempt from 60 yards. 3 minutes later William Casey stretched the lead with a well taken point. On 12 minutes the game was over as a contest after Eoin Murnane goaled for a second time. Michael Meade hit two fantastic points to stretch the lead further. Brian Dillons replied on 19 minutes with a goal and on 23 minutes with a follow up point to leave the scores Whitechurch 3.08 - Brian Dillons 1.02. Juvenile County Semi - Final (Tracton Tuesday Sept 21st 6pm)

Whitechurch 2.07 - Tracton 2.11

Following the good performance in the semi - final against Tracton, Whitechurch were hopeful for this team to reach the final. Paul O'Sullivan received an injury in the quarter final which ruled him out for the semi final clash. Michael Osborne came in for O'Sullivan and proved to be worthy replacement. In a game which saw Whitechurch loose by 4 points by the eventual county champions, it was a game which could have been won had we got the rub of the green. Whitechurch trailed at half time by a single point 1.05 to 1.06. Dylan Burke was in impressive form hitting the Whitechurch goal in the opening half and also tagging on a couple of points. The Whitechurch backs were solid throughout with Ian Lee well in control. The second half goal came from the stick of captain John Scanlon who hit a long rang shot straight to the net. Mid way through the second half was the turning point when George Osborne blasted against the crossbar and the resulting ball eventually cleared from the line. This fortunate break for Tracton proved to be inspirational and they ran out eventual winners on a score line of 2.11 to 2.07. On the day the better team won and they went on to win the final. We wish to congratulate the U-16 team on reaching the semi - final and thank all involved for their efforts throughout the year. We wish the team success in the final stages of the league campaign. Juvenile County Quarter Final (Meelin Sunday 05/09/04)

Whitechurch 5.12 - St Marks 4.13

Whitechurch hang on in high scoring thriller and advance to County Semi-Final.

Once again the uncertainty of how many a side raised its head and delayed the start of the game for a few minutes. It was resolved and 13 a side played. St Marks opened the match in a higher gear to Whitechurch and were getting in good hard blocks, hassling and basically knocking Whitechurch off their stride. Don Duggan on the Whitechurch side was equal to the challange and kept the team alive in the opening minutes. St Marks were first to score from a free from young corner forward Eamon Brosnan. This game was always going to be tricky for Whitechurch Chairman John Brosnan having 3 Nephews involved in the St Marks team. John Scanlon equalised from a free on five minutes, and almost immediately another free for St Marks was tapped over. The first goal of this 9 goal thriller happened on 8 minutes when a 50 yard free for St Marks found its way to the net. Dylan Burke reacted quickly and hit over a fabulous point from play. John Scanlon hit another well taken free, after Don Duggan did the grafting to earn a free which left the scores 1.03 - 0.03. Whitechurch were now on top and starting to settle after the opening slow start. Richard Sherlock hit a precise pass to Colm Keane who tapped over and David Kiely followed with a skillful point from the wing to level the sides after 14 minutes 1.02 - 0.05. Colm Keane caught a mighty ball and passed to the unmarked Dylan Burke who made the space, turned and ran on goal blasting to the net giving the goalkeeper no chance. Whitechchurch well in command of this period leading 1.05 - 1.02. Whitechurch fowling close to goal was penalised by St Marks corner forward who pointed another free. Dylan Burke snap shot on goal was narrowly wide but followed on 17 minutes with another skillful point. Whitechurch allowed St Marks back into the game and squandered vital possession. St Marks tagged another point on 20 minutes to leave just 2 the margin. John Scanlons abilty to cut a side line ball again was evident in Meelin. David Kiely's work rate was out standing and put 3 points the margin after a brillant point. St Marks tagged another 2 points to leave one point the margin and leveled with a long range free on 28 minutes. Hard worker Don Duggan got score of the first half after continous work and dogged determination kicked the ball over the bar to give Whitechurch a single point lead at the break. 1.09 - 1.08.

Dream start to the second half as Paul O'Sullivan goaled in the opening minute. St Marks managed to clear a goal mouth scramble but only as far as Colm Keane who was fowled and the close in free was tapped over by Paul O'Sullivan to stretch the lead 2.10 - 1.08. Another chance for Whitechurch to kill the match was turned over by St Marks who upped "the anti" and hung in. Shane Cahill caught some great dropping balls into the square and cleared his lines very well. St Marks goaled a second time following a bad clearance from defence to take St Marks back into the game and give them the initative. Shortly after St Marks centre forward soloed through, hit a blistering shot on goal, which Shane saved well and knocked out for a 65. The 65 fell short and failed to be cleared and St Marks took a one point lead on 12 mins 3.08 - 2.10. Whitechurch fowled and was punished again by the free taking of their corner forward. Now it was Whitechurch's turn to to up "the anti" and they did just that after Dylan Burke hit a cracker of a goal to put Whitechurch back in a 1 point lead. 3.10 - 3.09. St Marks levelled from play and we knew that we were in for an exciting finish. No team were able to pull away sufficiently to put the game out of reach. Goal number 4 for Whitechurch came from the stick of Paul O'Sullivan after a great solo run to give a 3 point lead. David Kiely was picking up some some great loose balls and slotted over a great point on 18 minutes. Whitechurch hit 2 wides from scorable chances. Shane Cahill was put under pressure but was equal to the calling, catching great balls. As one would have expected another twist to game came on 24 minutes when continous goal mouth pressure from St Marks resulted in a goal. The teams were level again on 25 minutes after a great point from St Marks corner forward 4.11 each. Back to the other end went the play and Colm Keane plucked the ball from the air and ran on goal and after a goal mouth scramble George Osborne found the net. St Marks went straight back down the field and Shane Cahill's goal was bombarded but the defence coped well and John Scanlon eventually cleared. Whitechurch were awarded a 50 yard free and calm Scanlon stepped up and pointed a pressure free on the stroke of full time to leave 3 the margin. The game was not over yet and went into injury time. At the rate things were going we were half expecting a St Marks equaliser goal but this was not to be and the final score was a point for St Marks to leave 2 the margin, Whitechurch 5.12 - St Marks 4.13. Whitechurch advace to th semi-final where they will meet the winners of Tracton and Ballyclough. We wish the team continued success.

Minor A City Hurling Final (Ballinlough Wednesday 01/09/04)

Whitechurch 1.06 - St Finbarrs 3.10

On a wet and dirty evening St Finbarrs advance to the county after defeating Whitechurch by a 10 point margin. The Barrs started the strongest and took a strong early lead. Whitechurch battled bravely but were unable to topple a more evenly balanced Barrs team. This was always going to be a tough assignment for the lads, against the first team from a strong senior club and one must not forget - eight of the starting Whitechurch team were juveniles.

In the opening minute Brian O'Sullivan was unlucky not to give Whitechurch the tonic goal start after his close in attempt was blocked by the corner back. It was the Barrs who opened the scoring on 2 minutes from their corner forward with a well taken point from play. The Bars dominated the next 10 minutes hitting a total of 1.02 and a couple of chances wide. Both corner forwards for the Barrs were causing trouble and their centre field were also on top. Whitechurch moved Brian O'Sullivan and Peter O'Driscoll to midfield in an attempt to counteract the Barrs. The Barrs had a lead of 1.04 to no score built up after 15 minutes. Whitechurch started to get into the game and created a few chances which unfortunately did not result in scores. The Barrs replaced their full forward, showing the dominance of young Ian Lee in full back. the killer blow came on 21 minutes when a free landed short which Whitechurch failed to clear adequately and the Barrs capatilised by blasting to the net giving Shane Cahill no chance. Whitechurch registered their first score from a free by Peter O'Driscoll on 24 minutes. John Scanlon was getting the better of his man and was clearing some great balls from defence. The Barrs tagged on another well worked point just before half time to leave the scores 2.05 - 0.01 at the break. Half time substitution saw Ted Vaughan replace Brian Cahill.

Like the semi-final against Bishopstown Whitechurch started the second half all fired up and hurled as they are capeable of doing in the opening seven minutes hitting 4 points without reply. Sharp shooter O'Driscoll hit 2 frees in the opening 3 minutes and point of the match came from Brian O'Sullivan after a terrific solo run. Brendan Murnane hit over point number four after a Colm Keane pass. Whitechurch appeared to have control and had the Barrs under pressure until disaster struck and the Barrs goaled against the run of play. This was the turning point of the game and unfortunately all the hard work of the opening 7 minutes was cancelled in one blow. The Barrs lead was now 3.05 - 0.05 and this enabled them to grow in confidence. When things don't go your way it becomes hard to focus and mistakes are made. Whitechurch gave away some unnecesary frees and were penalised on the scoreboard accordingly. Peter O'Driscoll tagged another point from a free after 12 minutes with the Barrs hitting 4 (3 from frees) to leave the scores 3.09 - 0.06. Richard Sherlock replaced Brian Boland in defence and in fairness to the Whitechurch players they battled bravely and attempted to contain their opponents. Personally for me score of the year was hit by Peter O'Driscoll after 23 minutes of the second half. Whitechurch were awarded a 21 yard free near the sideline on the bank side of Ballinlough. What Mikey Sheehy done to Paddy Cullen in 1978 in Croke Park in the football All Ireland, Peter O'Driscoll replicated in hurling. The quickly taken free caught all napping including the referee and the ball ended in the top corner of the net. It is a pity this was not caught on video but congratulations Peter on such a skillful score. The Barrs tagged on another point to leave the scores 3.10 - 1.06. Alan Corcoran replaced Don Duggan in the closing minutes. Both sides missed a couple of chances but the Barrs went on to take their second trophy of the week. Their Junior team defeated Dillons in the Junior final the previous Sunday. To the Whitechurch players and mentors, well done on reaching the final and thanks for the effort put in throughout the year. We wish the Juvenile team the best of luck in the county. Remember 8 of the starting 15 and 7 subs of this minor team are representing Whitechurch in the county section of the juvenile hurling. The team lined out as follows:

Shane Cahill

John Scanlon - Ian Lee - Michael Quinlan

Brian Boland - Jonathan O'Sullivan - Fuad Fawsi

Paul O'Sullivan - Pat Casey

Don Duggan - Brian O'Sullivan(0.01) - Brian Cahill

Colm Keane - Peter O'Driscoll(1.04) - Brendan Murnane(0.01)

Juvenile Hurling City Final (Kilcully Sunday 29/08/04)

Whitechurch 4.17 - Delaneys 0.01

In a one sided final Whitechurch advance to the county.

In what turned out to be a totally one sided game, Whitechurch took a while to settle having hit 7 wides in the opening 6 minutes before opening the scoring by full forward George Osborne who goaled on 7 minutes. John Scanlon pointed a free shortly afterwards and on 10 minutes pointed another free to leave the scores 1.02 to 0.00. Delaneys were creating chances up front but Whitechurch backs were winning the duals. David Hegarty, Richard Sherlock and Brian Boland ensuring early exchanges went in favor of Whitechurch. On 12 minutes John Scanlon pointed another free and immediately at the other end David Kiely intercepted an almost certain Delaneys score. Aided by a breeze Whitechurch were starting to grow in confidence and on 16 minutes Paul O'Sullivan hit over a fantastic point on the run. Goal Keeper Shane Cahill was called into action on 17 minutes and was equal to the challange. Ian Lee at full back showed his strenght and hurling ability when called into action. Delaneys fowls were punished by the free taking skills of John Scanlon who pointed another free on 19 minutes. Paul O'Sullivan hit another point on the run to leave the scores 1.06 to 0.00. Two further points from Scanlon and O'Sullivan on the 24th and 25th minute left 11 points the margin. On 26 minutes Whitechurch were awarded a 30 yard free which Scanlon blasted to the net to kill the game as a contest. On the stroke of half time John Scanlon cut a brillant side line ball into the square where Dylan Burke collected and finished to the net to leave the scores 3.08 to 0.00 at half time. This final was over as a contest.

Whitechurch started the second half as they finished the first and Michael Osborne pointed after 2 minutes. Colm Keane pointed shortly after and Paul O'Sullivan hit another trade mark point on the run after 6 minutes. Dylan Burke pointed from a very sharp angle on 7 minutes and Paul O'Sullivan hit another on 9 minutes to leave the scores 3.13 to 0.00. Delaneys hit a few wides from scorable chances but were outclassed in all areas of the field. Whitechurch appeared to loose concentration and hit a couple of bad wides. Paul O'Sullivan pointed a close in free on 16 minutes to get the scoring back on track. Dylan Burke and John Scanlon added 2 further points with 10 minutes remaining. Anthony Ronan replaced Sean C Burke and Sean Ryan replaced Colm Keane on 21 minutes. Shortly afterwards the Osborne brothers George and Michael made way for Conor McAuliffe and David McCarthy. Delaneys pointed on 24 minutes through their centre forward. Brian Humphries replaced Paul Walsh on 26 minutes and Sean Ryan hit goal number 4 on 27 minutes after a defensive error. John Scanlon completed the scoring with a free on full time to leave the final score Whitechurch 4.17 - Delaneys 0.01. Even though the scores show this was a forwards night, the backs also played their part with Hegarty, Lee, Walsh, Sherlock, Boland and Kiely answering the cause when asked. We wish the team the best of luck in the county section. The team lined out as follow.

Minor A Hurling Semi-Final (Kilcully Thursday 19/08/04)

Whitechurch 1.11 - Bishopstown 2.03

Having weathered the storm in the first half from Bishopstown and the weather conditions,Whitechurch dominated the second half to win a hard, physical and tough encounter and book a place in the final against the Barr's.

Peter O'Driscoll transfered his free taking skills from the Junior team to the Minor team and opened the scoring for Whitechurch after 2 minutes, hard work by Paul O'Sullivan earned the free. B/Town levelled on 4 minutes from play. The rain began to fall and made conditions difficult. The O'Sullivan brothers combined well with Paul setting up Brian who fired over a great point on the run. Brian was involved in the next score also after a pass to Brian Cahill who slotted over to give a 2 point lead (0.03 - 0.01). The game not helped by the weather became a bit scrappy with both sides missing chances and hitting wides. On 12 minutes Peter O'Driscoll pointed another free. B/Town took command of the game for the next 10 minutes and scored 1.02 without reply, 2 points from frees and a goal from play to lead by 1.03 to 0.04. Whitechurch was finding it difficult to get to terms with certain B/Town players whose physical dominance was causing some problems. Whitechurch made a few positional changes and moved PeterO'Driscoll out from full forward. At this stage of the game B/Town backs were on top. A long range free from John Scanlon saw Colm Keane catch a great high ball and was subsequently fowled on way to goal. Peter O'Driscoll pointed the resulting free to leave the scores 0.05 - 1.03 in favor of B/Town. It seemed as if Whitechurch had survived the B/Town pressure with limited damage until a side line ball crossed into the square was blasted to the net on 24 minutes. No further scores were recorded for the remainder of the half with both sides hitting wides. Whitechurch were slowly getting back into the game and regaining posession in areas where B/Town were dominant. B/Town had a 4 point lead at half time (0.05 - 2.03).

What ever Dave McGrath and his fellow selectors said at half time had immediate effect. Whitechurch opened the second half all fired up. Shane Cahill was brought into the action early and coped well. Whitechurch were awarded a close in free, Peter opted to go for goal. The ball was stopped and a goal mouth scramble resulted. From this the ref decided to bash the ball on the 21 yard line which Brian O'Sullivan whipped first time to the back of the net. Game on and Whitechurch heads were lifted. Just a single point behind and Peter shot over a superb point on the sideline betwen the 21 and 14 yard line. Sides were level (1.06 - 2.03) and Whitechurch dominance began. Our back line helped by Ian Lee, Fuad Fawsi, Brian Boland and Michael Quinlan were containing the B/Town forwards, John Scanlons long clearances were very helpful and put the pressure immediately back on B/Town. B/Town scoring chances were limited in the opening 12 minutes of the second half hitting 2 wides one from play and one from a 65. Whitechurch regained the lead after 10 minutes through a well taken free by Peter O'Driscoll and one minute from the same position Peter slotted over another free to give Whitechurch a 2 point lead (1.08 - 2.03). Whitechurch rallied well and our midfield were dominating the exchanges. 2 point leads are dangerous in Whitechurch and we were awarded another free on 15 minutes which Peter pointed. Frustration was setting in on some B/Town players and their full forward received his marching orders for wild pulling across John Scanlon. (No question with the decision). Whitechurch used the extra man well and continued to put pressure on the B/Town backs. Peter hit an 80 yard free wide and following a goal mouth scramble on 24 minutes Brendan Murnane pointed to leave 4 points the margin. Whitechurch remained focused, particularily the backs and following a long goal mouth scramble in the Whitechurch square the seige was lifted and eventually cleared. B/Town hit 2 further wides before PaulO'Sullivan pointed to leave 5 the margin and book our place in the final against the Barr's. Whitechuch held B/Town scoreless for the second half and congratulations to all involved with the team who deseved the hard fought win and best of luck in the final.

Junior A Hurling Semi-Final .(Ballinlough Monday 16/08/04)

Whitechurch 0.13 - Brian Dillon's 2.09

Quote: "Sport can be Cruel" and no crueler blow could have been served to Whitechurch during this semi-final. From a spectator point of view it hit hard and I can only imagine how the players felt.

Whitechurch were on the scoreboard in the opening seconds through a Peter O' Driscoll free and Peter doubled the scoring 2 minutes later from a second well taken free. Opening exchanges were physical and tough with John Drummy,John Meade and Peter Lynch equal to same. Dillon's applied early pressure with no result on the scoreboard. Whitechurch increased their lead on 6 minutes through Eoin Murnane after a Philip O'Connell cross to leave three points the margin. On eight minutes Dillon's were on level terms after a long range free dropped into the square and following a goal mouth scramble their corner forward lifted and blasted to the net giving Conor Buckley no chance. Whitechurch immediately replied through Donnacha Murnane after good work by John Meade and William Casey. Whitechurch upped the anti and soon had their 3 point lead restored after points from Colm Sheahan and a free from Peter O' Driscoll after John Meade was fowled on line to goal to leave the scores (Whitechurch 0.06 Dillon' s 1.0) Dillon's were awarded 2 frees in the following few minutes which they scored. Colm Sheahan tapped over his second point after William Casey broke the ball to John Meade who released it to Colm. Dillon's always managed to keep in touch and never let Whitechurch out of sight. A great individual point from their midfielder left the scores (0.07 - 1.03) in favor of Whitechuech. Peter O' Driscoll was in good scoring form and shot over another fantastic point. On 21 minutes warning number 1 for Whitechurch was given after a Dillon' s goal was disallowed for a square ball. The perfect reply from Whitechurch after John Drummy set up Peter O' Driscoll who pointed to leave 3 points again the margin. This turned out to be the last score for Whitechurch for the half. Dillon' s dominated the remainder of the half and for all their efforts only managed 2 points one from a 65 and the second from a 70 yard free to leave the scores Whitechurch 0.09 - Dillon' s 1.05. Dillon' s hit 3 wides in the last 7 minutes of the first half and narrowly missed one goal opportunity. Whitechurch were fortunate to hold a single point lead at half time.

Dillon' s opened the second half as they finished the first and warning number 2 was given after just 2 minutes when another goal was disallowed after fowling the goalkeeper. The sides were level on 4 minutes having pointed a close in free. (0.09 - 1.06). Seanie O'Gorman was introduced for Roy O' Driscoll after 7 minutes and soon proved he was back to fitness after missing the opening games through injury. The Whitechurch backs were under constant siege from Dillon' s but appeared to be holding tough. John O' Connell and John Drummy were combining well to clear great balls. Dillon' s took the lead for the first time on 11 minutes from a close in free and Whitechurch drew level within 2 minutes from Peter O' Driscoll free. This was our first score for 23 minutes. Dillon' s again narrowly missed a goal opportunity having blasted wide. On 18 minutes Whitechurch regained the lead through Peter O' Driscoll after a good run from Seanie O' Gorman set up Peter. Both sides were guilty of wides in the following few minutes. Dillon' s full forward broke through minus the hurley but Conor Buckley stood firm, saved and cleared well. Jason Kelly replaced Donacha Murnane after 23 minutes. Dillon' s had 2 shots narrowly wide and Whitechurch appeared to be holding on. 2 further wides from Dillon's and one from Whitechurch before the teams were on level terms on 29 minutes after Dillon' s pointed a free. Whitechurch replied straight away through the in form Peter O' Driscoll from a pass by John Meade to take a single point lead. Another good rally and Whitechurch stretched the lead to 2 points after Philip O' Connell passed to the unmarked Colm Sheahan who pointed on the stroke of full time.Seanie O'Gorman was introduced for the injured Peter Lynch. It looked as if we were heading for our first final appearance since 1997 until disaster struck on 31 minutes when Dillon' s goaled for a second time to lead by a single point. The original shot was stopped by Conor Buckley but Dillon's reacted faster on the follow up and raised the green flag. Dillon' s were awarded a free from the resulting puck out which they pointed. This was the final action from the game and Dillon' s won by 2 points.Heartbreak is one of many words which could be used after such an ordeal. But as stated earlier, sport is cruel and we must lift ourselves and go again. To the players, mentors and all involved with the team, thank you for the huge effort throughout the year.

The team lined out as follows:

Conor Buckley

Roy O'Driscoll - Patrick Foley - Patrick O'Driscoll

Junior B Hurling Semi-Final Replay.(Ballinlough Tuesday 10/08/04)

Whitechurch 3.07 - Redmonds 2.11

Heartbreak as Redmonds edge out Whitechurch by a single point after replay.

Redmonds opened the replay in determined fashion by applying early pressure to the Whitechurch Backs. Ray Burke opened the scoring on 3 minutes and Padraig Murnane doubled the lead on 6 minutes from a free. Whitechurch appeared to be settling well, having weathered the early storm, however after a goal mouth scramble Redmonds goaled to take a single point lead(1.0 - 0.02). This goal lifted Redmonds and they followed with a well taken point on 11 minutes. Whitechurch seemed to fade but Seanie Murnane lifted spirits after a well worked point. Whitechurch missed 3 frees in the following 6 minutes. Seanie Murnane was continuing his outstanding display from the drawn game by helping out in defence and in a move started by himself, including Ray Burke and Brendan Murnane was unlucky not to finish in the net. Conor Kelleher put the teams level on 16minutes from a free but Redmonds regained a 2 point lead from 2 frees. Redmonds applied continual pressure, but for a number of bad misses and good clearances from the Whitechurch Backs failed to increase their lead and kill the game. Fuad Fawsi was introduced on 27 minutes for the injured Ger Harte and immediatly was involved in the play. Redmonds took a 3 point lead from a 65 on 28 minutes. Padraig Murnane hit a vital score for Whitechurch one minute later when he kicked the ball to the net to level the sides at 1.04 each. Whitechurch had surived a vital period of pressure from Redmonds. On the stroke of half time Redmonds regained a one point lead from a close in free to leave the scores 1.05 to 1.04 at the break. From the balance of play Redmonds deserved the half time lead.

The half time talk worked wonders for Whitechurch as they started the second half in true Championship Spirit. Murt Kelleher replaced Pat Hennessy and moved out to centre forward with John Hegarty moving to full forward. John O'Callaghan hit two 65s in the opening 3 minutes to give Whitechurch a single point lead. On 6 minutes a well worked move involving Conor Kelleher, Brendan Murnane and blasted to the net by Dave Buckley gave Whitechurch a 4 point lead (2.06 - 1.05). Now was the time for Whitechurch to put the game out of the reach of Redmonds but failed to do so. Redmonds responded by hitting 2 points with Whitechurch squandering a number of chances. Redmonds had weathered the Whitechurch storm and tagged another point to trail by just a single point 1.08 - 2.06 after 12 minutes. John Hegarty combined with Seanie Murnane to give Whitechurch back a 2 point lead. Redmonds applied pressure in the Whitechurch square and were unlucky not to score a goal after blasting narrowly wide. Redmonds wing forward scored a fantastic solo effort point having collected the ball in his own half back line. This score lifted Redmonds and they were back on level terms after pointing a 65 on 17 minutes. 1.10 - 2.07. Whitechurch took over possession for the following 3 minutes but failed to register a score and hit 3 bad wides. Brian Humphries was introduced for Brendan Murnane and saw the Whitechurch team rearranged to put Brian Humphries in centre back with John O'Callaghan moving to the forwards. The score which turned the game came in bizare circumstances. Gerry O'Rielly caught and cleared a high lobbing ball on the goal line. The action was continuing in centre field when the umpire raised the green flag. The referee was called into the square. The umpire claimed Gerry was over the line when he caught the ball. After discussion the referee over ruled the umpire and threw the ball in on the 21 yard line. Resulting from this Redmon's full forward blasted to the net (however Whitechurch had a chance to clear the ball before making its way to the full forward) Just the tonic Redmond's required. 6 minutes remaining Whitechurch trailed by 3 points 2.10 - 2.07. Brian O'Sullivan replaced Dave Buckley in a final effort to get back into the game. Redmonds took a 4 point lead with 3 minutes remaining after pointing a 65. After a goal mouth scramble the ball came out to Seanie Murnane and he picked his spot and blasted to the corner of the net to leave just a single point between the teams 2.11 - 3.07. On the srroke of full time Brian O'Sulivan was fouled after making a good solo run through and Whitechurch were awarded a 40 yard free which was unfortunately missed. 2 minutes injury time was played and Redmonds held on to the single point lead. On the balance of play over the 2 games either team could have won but Redmonds deserved their victory and we wish them success in the final. We congratulate and say well done to the Junior B panel and mentors on giving their best throughout the Championship. Junior B Hurling Semi-Final .(Ballinlough Friday 30/07/04)

Whitechurch 0.15 - Redmonds 2.09

Determination - fighting spirit - and never say die are a few words to describe the B championship draw with Redmonds. Despite missing a couple of players on the night each man stood up and was counted and battled to the bitter end. The game was a hard, tough, physical but fair game and a draw was a fair result on the night.

Whitechurch opened the scoring after 4 minutes through Brendan Murnane after a well worked point involving Conor Kelleher and Dave Buckley. Redmonds equalised almost immediately and retained most of the possession for the coming minutes missing a free and a 65 in the process. Redmonds took the lead from a free on 8 minutes but the in form Brendan Murnane equalised 2 minutes later to leave the scored 2 points each. Redmonds No.8 was starting to prove a handfull and scored pointed after a 60 yard solo run. Redmonds were starting to get the upper hand and scored again to take a 2 point lead. Whitechurch backs were under pressure and a Redmonds goal looked inevitable after the wing forward broke through but a fantastic reflex save from Gerry Rielly put the ball out for a 65. On 18 minutes Redmonds goaled to leave the scores Redmonds 1.04 Whitechurch 0.02. The game seemed to be going away from Whitechurch. Seanie Murnane switched with Pat Casey to centre field and immediately lifted Whitechurch spirits after a superb solo effort point. Redmonds pointed within a minute and appeared to be keeping control of the game. Whitechurch upped a gear and took over for the remainder of the half. Padraig Murnane pointed on 26 minutes. Youthful Ray Burke slotted over a point almost immediately to leave just 3 points the margin. Whitechurch forwards began hooking, hasseling and blocking and in particular John Hegarty broke alot of ball and put the Redmonds backs under pressure. Padraig Murnane tapped over a close in free and followed up with a well taken point from the resulting puck out. One of the great scores of the half was the equalising point from Dave Buckley. Great work from Conor Kelleher and Seanie Murnane laid the ball off to Dave who convincingly split the posts to leave the scores at half time Whitechurch 0.08 - Redmonds 1.05. Game on.

Redmonds opened the second half with a point and Whitechurch almost took the lead a minute later when Dave Buckley was through on goal but the keeper saved well and batted out for a 65 which Conor Kelleher slotted over to level the match. Both sides were guilty of missed chances from play and frees in the opening minutes. The inspirational Seanie Murnane played the Captains role in rallying the team and put Whitechurch ahead with a great point after 9 minutes. Redmonds drew back on level terms 1 minute later through the corner forward. Whitechuch were back in the lead 2 minutes later and a well hit free from Conor Kelleher. Sides were back on level terms shortly after a Redmonds free.(1.08 - 0.11). A long range free from Redmonds after 14 minutes gave them back the lead. Seanie Murnane again leading by example soloed through to set up Dave Buckley for another great point. Sides level again. Gerry Rielly surpassed his reflex save in the first half with a point blank save from Redmonds full forward to keep the tie alive. Anthony Kelleher came on for Ger Harte after 21 minutes which saw a minor rearrangement of the team. Pat Hennessy moved back to centre back with Anthony Kelleher moving to full forward. Dave Buckley gave Whitechiurch the lead after Pat Casey cleared a ball to Padraig Murnane who set up Dave. (0.13 - 1.09). Five minutes left and Redmonds goaled for a second time and it looked as if we were going to be pipped but in fairness no heads dropped and heels dug in for the remaining minutes. Ray Burke pointed on 29 minutes to leave just a single point again. Paul Finnegan replaced Anthony Kelleher. Junior A Hurling Quarter Final Replay.(Ballinlough Tuesday 27/07/04)

Whitechurch 3.08 - Glen Rovers 1.06

"Sweet well deserved victory"

On many occasions in the past Whitechurch found themselves on the wrong side of the result after a replay. Many pundits reckoned we lost "our chance in the drawn game" BUT on this occassion determination - spirit and good homework laid the foundation for a well deserved victory. From number 1 Conor Buckley (3 fantastic saves) through to number 15 Philip O'Connell every man stood up and was counted.

Whitechurch opened in determined fashion and the Glen goalkeeper was brought into action in the opening minute and pulled off a great save from Eoin Murnane. The Glen scored first on 4 minutes from a 65 and Whitechurch drew level through Jason Kelly after a well worked score involving William Casey and Philip O'Connell one minute later. Unfortunately Jason Kelly left the field injured after 10 minutes and was replaced by Victor O'Sullivan. Eoin Murnane hit over what looked a perfect point but was waived wide however Eoin raised the green flag shortly afterwards, when he flicked the ball to the net after a great pass from John Drummy. Victor O'Sullivan added another point immediately to leave Whitechurch leading 1.02 to 0.01. Peter O' Driscoll pointed from a free on 15 minutes and all was looking good for Whitechurch. Pat Foley, Roy and Patrick O'Driscoll were combining very well but the Glen hit a good patch and scored 1.01 in three minutes to leave only a single point between the teams. The Glen drew level from a free on 20 minutes. The Glen were on top for the remainder of the first half and tagged on 2 further points from frees to lead by 2 at half time. Whitechurch 1.03 - Glen Rovers 1.05. Despite the Glen dominating the last 10 minutes of the first half Whitechurch had 2 goal chances and both John Meade and John Drummy ensured minimal scores were given away, catching and clearing great balls.

Whatever was said at half time, it had immediate impact. Whitechurch opened the second half with a well worked point involving John Drummy - Victor O'Sullivan and finished off by Peter 'ODriscoll. Two further points from John Meade and a free from Peter O'Driscoll saw Whitechurch take a single point lead after 5 minutes. 1.06 to 1.05. The Glen were under pressure but drew level through their wing forward after 7 minutes. A Glen free dropped short but the full back line stood solid and scrambled the ball away to safety. Conor Buckley pulled off a great save resulting in a 65 which was put wide. The resulting puck out was collected by Colm Sheahan who blasted on goal but the Glen keeper was equal to the shot and saved well, Eoin Murnane pounced on the rebound and raised the green flag for a second time. Philip O'Connell pointed immediately after a well timed pass from Peter O'Driscoll to leave 4 points the margin. Whitechurch missed a couple of chances up front. John Drummy's ability to catch high balls was evident throughout the second half and was inspirational. The third goal was secured on 16 minutes by Philip O'Connell resulting from a pass by Eoin Murnane to leave the scores Whitechurch 3.07 - Glen Rovers 1.06. In a final effort to get the better of the Whitechurch backs the Glen re-arranged the forward line but to no avail. Colm Sheahan was fowled and Peter O'Driscoll pointed the free to leave an 8 point margin with 8 minutes remaining. Donal Kelly replaced Peter Lynch and immediately was brought into action. No scores were recorded in the last 7 minutes but frantic hurling resulted at times.Conor Buckley recorded 2 fantastic saves during this period ensuring a path to the semi-final where Whitechurch meet the winners of Dillons and Mayfield.
